The Wegmans Way: Healthy Snacking for the Binghamton Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

If I had to pinpoint one of the greatest things about BU, oddly enough, the free, quick
and easy bus trips to Wegmans would be at the top of my list. Wegmans, a familyowned
supermarket that has been called America’s Best Grocery Store by the Food Network and the top large grocery chain in the United States by Consumer Reports, is located just ten minutes from campus.

When it comes to making healthy choices, every college girl would agree that it can become a difficult task to keep up a steady routine and remain disciplined on campus – especiallywhen dining halls are fully stocked with only the best Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream. Taking a weekly trip to Wegmans is a great way to effectively curb those late night study cravings and avoid giving in to the
unhealthy temptations on campus!

Here is a list of my Top 5 Snacks you can stock up on at Wegmans that are both
healthy and satisfying:

For the Fridge:

Yogurt

In addition to being a delicious snack that can instantly satisfy cravings for something
sweet, yogurt is one of the top health foods. Why?  Yogurt is an excellent source of
protein, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin B 12. This benefits  help your body in many great
ways including boosting immunity and lowering cholesterol.

Try: Greek Yogurt, either Stonyfield Oikos Organic or Chobani

Fruits and Vegetables

Sweet, savory and unbelievably satisfying staples to have around the dorm, fruit and
vegetables will always be nutritious and delicious snacks. However, some are healthier
than others. Some contain more harmful chemical pesticides  and should be
avoided or bought organic including: celery, bell peppers, salad, carrots, peaches,
strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, pears, grapes and cherries.

Try: Although Wegmans has a great organic produce section, if the cost of buying
organic is not in your budget, try the following  fruits and vegetables. These fruits and veggies weren’t grown using man-made chemical pesticides, fossil fuel or sewage-based fertilizers, or genetically
modified seeds: Avocados, pineapple, mangoes, grapefruit, kiwi, papaya, watermelon,
broccoli, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. No matter what you purchase, be sure to
always wash your fruits and veggies before you eat!

Water

Most people are chronically dehydrated and don’t even know it! When our bodies are
feeling the need for hydration, most of us mistake that feeling for hunger and eat to try and satisfy
the craving. While balancing a busy schedule, college students need to be aware of
how much water they are drinking in order to avoid  fatigue, headaches,
and irritability. Drinking the recommended 8 servings of water a day can help you lose
weight, have healthier skin, be more productive, and boost your immune system.

Try: Buying a Brita or PUR water filtration pitcher and a reusable water bottle. Not only
will you reduce plastic waste, but you will be able to fill your water bottle at any time in
your room or the dining halls for free! Who doesn’t like a good bargain?

On the Shelf:

Instant Oatmeal

Yummy for breakfast or an anytime snack, oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber. It’s also
quick and easy to make in the dorm. Oatmeal can lower your cholesterol, boost energy,
aid with memory function –thanks to an abundance of vitamin B–, improve dry skin, hair,
acne, and help prevent colon cancer.

Try: Quaker Instant Oatmeal – Weight Control variety pack featuring maple & brown
sugar, cinnamon, and banana bread flavors

Almonds

A great “to-go” snack, almonds are among one of the healthiest foods to eat and are
surprisingly filling. Almonds are a terrific source of protein meaning that they will help keep you full and satisfied longer. They are  good for your heart, brain and skin and can help regulate cholesterol, protect against diabetes and cancer,  aid in weight loss and boost energy- among other benefits!

Try: Blue Diamond Whole Natural 100 Calorie Grab Bags are great portion control and
easily fit in your bag for an in-between class snack.
