Wellness Wednesday: 5 Natural Remedies for Stress and Anxiety

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Many collegietes are freaked out, worried, stressed or anxious about a variety of things: copious amounts of homework, foolish friend drama, or never getting quite enough sleep. Before calling your doctor and asking, well begging, for a prescription for Xanax, you may want to try these safe, nondrug remedies.  Some are short term solutions while others help lessen stress and anxiety over time. Either way, all five of these are quick and easy remedies that can all be done on campus!

Drinking a hot cup of Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is a fantastic herb for treating anxiety! To help calm and relax your body, try drinking two cups of Chamomile tea each day! Check out the tea bags offered in Seasons, Einstein’s and Falcon Mart to find some chamomile right on campus!

Exercise

Shocker! Exercising is great for the brain as it helps with both depression and anxiety. Many collegietes become worried and anxious about their bodies often lowering self-esteem. By exercising on a regular basis you will begin to feel healthier, often causing a rise in self-esteem. Work out more, worry less!

Drinking Green Tea

Green tea contains an amino acid called L- theanine that helps lower blood pressure, anxiety and heart rates! Even Japanese Buddhist Monks drank green tea to help them stay alert and relaxed as they meditated for hours. Green tea may be found in a variety of places on campus, including Mad Falcon, multiple vending machines, Seasons and the Falcon Mart!

Lavender

In one study conducted in Florida, students who were exposed to the scent of lavender before their exam had less anxiety and performed better! Luckily the aroma of lavender may be found in various items: shampoos, soaps, lotions, incents, air fresheners, and even detergent and dryer sheets! Because Bentley doesn’t allow candles in rooms on campus, try picking up some lavender lotion or laundry detergent to add lavender to your everyday life!

Eat something! Anything!

Collegietes become cranky, irritable, and anxious when they start to get hungry! If you begin to feel more anxious, your blood sugar may be dropping and a quick pick me up is all you need! Try eating a small snack such as dark chocolate, almonds, or a banana that will leave you feeling satisfied and full until your next meal!
