Highlights of Waltham

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

After a week of endless papers, club meetings, advising sessions, and infamous GB projects, I often find myself wanting to break free from the chaotic Bentley community for the day. This usually means heading to Newbury Street with my girlfriends for some much needed retail therapy (and Pinkberry, of course).

But, because of our close location to Boston, we often forget that Waltham is an actual town – with legitimate things to do. And no, I’m not just referring to Moody Street. I did some research and found unique ways to spend the day in Waltham.

So, next time you are in need of a break from the “Bentley Bubble,” skip the mob scene at the Miller Shuttle Stop, and explore one of the Collegiette™-approved activities below.

  • Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation(154 Moody Street): This one is for all the history-buffs out there. Located on the Charles River, the CRMI is actually documented as America’s first factory. Stop by if you want to experience Waltham’s role in the Industrial Revolution. Bonus – the admission fee is only $5.00 with a student ID.
  • Charles River Walk: A true hidden gem of Waltham, this scenic pathway runs alongside the Charles River. Perfect for walking, biking, or jogging, it’s a great place to enjoy what remains of the Fall season. Next time you are due for a workout, skip the Dana Center, and head over to the river walk.
  • Gore Place(52 Gore Street): Gore Place offers tours of the historical estate owned by Governor Christopher Gore during the 1800’s. The 45 acre grounds feature an elegantly furnished mansion that anyone can appreciate. Fun Fact – it’s also a great place to celebrate the holidays! In December, the estate puts on Santa Holiday Teas, complete with traditional English tea, scones, and sandwiches. Check out their website for details.
  • Lyman Estate Greenhouses(185 Lyman Street): The Lyman Estate boasts four of the oldest greenhouses in the country. This time of year, the citrus plants are in full bloom and their sweet aroma fills the gardens. Even better, admission to the greenhouses is completely free. So, invite some friends and spend an afternoon admiring the exotic flowers.
  • Rose Art Museum(Brandeis University): For those interested in art, this is a must see. The museum, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, features a wide collection of both modern and contemporary pieces. The Rose just launched three new exhibitions this past week, and is currently offering free student-led tours. Show our neighbors over at Brandeis some support, and channel your inner Van Gogh for the day.

P.S. Did you know Waltham was named the 28th Best Place to Live in America by CNNMoney?
