Meet an RA: Mollie Montgomery

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

Name: Mollie Montgomery

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Midland, Texas

Major: Entrepreneurship and Economics double major

Why did you choose to be an RA? I love to help people, to listen to people’s problems, and to give advice.

What’s your favorite part about the job? I love the connections I’m making with my residents. I get to not only be their resource but I also get to be their friend. I also feel like I’m making a difference when I do get to be their resource.

What’s the hardest part? Feeling like I’m constantly “on.” I constantly have to be a friendly face around campus because I want the girls that live on my floor to feel like they can come to me with their problems, and I feel like it’s more welcoming. Sometimes it’s hard to be that friendly face, but I have to for my job.

What has happened that you didn’t expect? I think I knew I wasn’t going to have a lot of free time but I didn’t know I was actually going to enjoy not having that free time. A lot of my free time has been spent getting to know my residents and as an extrovert I thrive on getting to know people. It’s been enjoyable and refreshing to be with people instead of just having downtime and watching Netflix.

What have you learned about yourself? Evan, the RD, likes to give us personality tests. I learned my love language in the workplace is quality time, and I’ve learned why I thrive on quality time with people whether that’s my co-workers or my residents. Before we get the job we have to take a strengths finder test, one of my strengths is futuristic. I often try to plan my future to-a-t, and now that I know it’s a strength of mine I’ve been embracing it and using it as a tool to calm my stress and anxiety.
