5 Songs That Will Give You Chills

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

You know that feeling when a chord hits your ears in just the right way? Or when the lyrics to your favorite ballad coincide perfectly with your life in that very moment? It’s enough to send chills down your spine, and there is no better feeling to get when you’re listening to music. So here are five absolutely gorgeous and powerful songs that are sure to enlighten your musical senses.

  1. “White Winter Hymnal” – Fleet Foxes

Fleet Foxes know what they’re doing when it comes to harmonizing. Their music is bound to make your ears melt. “White Winter Hymnal” is one of their most popular and recognizable songs, and it’s a great tune to put on your winter playlist this year. Bonus points for the amazing covers people have done with the song as well. “White Winter Hymnal” is off of Fleet Foxes first self titled album (2008).

  1. “I Will Always Love You” – Whitney Houston

That voice though! Need I say more? When Houston belts out that infamous line you can’t lie and say your ear drums haven’t just erupted. Did you know that this hit was originally written and performed by Tennessee native, Dolly Parton? Nevertheless, its sad that the talented Whitney Houston passed away so soon, but her beautiful voice still remains in her timeless work. “I Will Always Love You” is off of the movie soundtrack The Bodyguard (1992).

  1. “Lose Yourself” – Eminem

You can’t forget about the song that changed Eminem’s career. The power and emotion felt through the lyrics of this rap classic will have you feeling on top of the world. The catchy beat is a major plus too. “Lose Yourself” was created for the movie soundtrack 8 Mile (2002).

  1. “Hallelujah” – Rufus Wainwright

It’s become a bit of a cliché through time, but nevertheless this classic still hits home. The lyrics are beautiful and the melody is irresistible. The original version is sung by Leonard Cohen, and it will forever rest in musical history, but if you’re looking for a good cover I am especially fond of the version performed by Rufus Wainwright. You can find “Hallelujah” off of Rufus’s album Poses (2001). PS- If you really want your mind blown, check out the version Rufus Wainwright did with the massive chorus group, Choir! Choir! Choir!

  1. “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” – Jennifer Hudson

I knew I had to include at least one song from a musical, and it was difficult to choose, but Jennifer Hudson blows it away in this performance. Her voice is so strong and beautiful, but don’t even get me started about the big climax of the song. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you listen to it. “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” is from the musical/movie Dream Girls (2006).
