While You Were Out: This Week’s Top Stories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

With the 2014 Winter Olympics coming to a close and the excitement over another celebrity at The Heights, there is a lot you may have missed this week.  Take a minute or two and get caught up on what’s going on in the world, your midterm studying could use a quick break!

Celebrity Spotting on Campus

This Tuesday, your Twitter feed was most likely flooded with tweets about Liam Neeson being on campus.  While I was skeptical of the first few tweets I saw, this was in fact true.  The star, most notably known for his Taken movies, was touring BC with his son.  I can’t tell you all how many times I heard the “someone should steal his son and we could have Taken 3” joke on Tuesday, but the visit was exciting and BC was buzzing with people trying to catch a glimpse of the star.

USA Men’s Hockey Doesn’t Make Podium

While an early win in a dramatic fashion over Russia in the preliminary round of the Sochi Olympic Games sparked high hopes that the USA Men’s Hockey Team would end the games at the top of the podium, disappointment has prevailed. After losing 1-0 against Canada at Friday’s semifinal game, Team USA’s chance at gold was no longer a reality.  On Saturday morning, the USA took on Finland for bronze.  Unfortunately, the team lost 5-0, and will be returning to the States without a medal.  However, if you’re a Boston Bruins fan (like me!), then you can’t be all that upset because Bruins goalie, Tuukka Rask, pitched a shutout against the USA playing for the Finnish team, which is a good sign for the rest of the NHL season to come!

Unrest in the Ukraine

Over the last few weeks, the world’s focus has been on Russia at the Olympics, but political unrest in a different Eastern European country has shifted the eyes of many to the Ukraine.  Kiev, the city pictured above, has recently been home to waves of violent protesters demanding the removal of the Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.  On Sunday, the protesters seized the capital as Parliament voted to remove the current president and hold new presidential elections in May.  The turbulence in this country has been battled in part by cries of peace, but Yanukovych says he will not step down.  In Kiev, the destruction of the capital can be seen in the picture, which features the city center in 2009, beautiful and pristine, and the same city center today, which is shattered with violence.

Party Anthem Music Video Released

On Thursday, Katy Perry released her much-anticipated music video for her song, “Dark Horse.” This popular song has swept the BC party scene like no other. You can easily expect to hear this song at a pregame in a dorm, a dance party in Walsh, or even as a pick-me-up in an overcrowded sweaty mod party. If you want to listen, you can check out Katy’s new music video yourself.

Jimmy Fallon Debuts as New Host of “The Tonight Show”

If anyone had doubts about Jimmy Fallon as the new host of The Tonight Show, shame on you! For Jimmy Fallon’s first full week, The Tonight Show averaged 8.5 million viewers, making it the franchise’s most-watched week in 20 years! With great guests like Justin Timberlake (“History of Rap Part 5” anyone?!), Michelle Obama, Will Ferrell, Bradley Cooper and Kristin Wiig as Harry Styles, this was a memorable week for NBC. Opening the Monday night show with an “$100 Bets” piece featuring SO many big names in NYC, the good times just kept rolling as the week went on. I have high hopes for Jimmy in this new time slot and can’t wait to see him Monday-Friday on NBC at 11:35pm!

Hope this helps you get caught up on what’s going on outside of the library.  Keep pushing Collegiettes!  Spring Break is almost here!
