What Does Your Phone Case Say About You?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

There was a point in time that a phone was a phone. We all remember the flip phones from middle school. Slowly but surely we have the seen the evolution and the integration of personality into our phones. Now, our phones are not only a life line to others but also they say as much about us as the clothes we choose to wear or the music we choose to listen to. From a single glance, we can learn a lot about a person.

The Phone Case with a Pocket or Compartment:

People who use these cases are definitely organized and like the ease of convenience and comfort. You don’t need all the fancy bling or the moving part; all you need is something that is going to be a plus in your life. What would you most likely keep in your nifty compartment? How about your student ID card, making your morning rush through the dining hall that much more efficient? Also, you can be sure to make it to your favorite seat before someone else snags it! And you cannot forget that it helps you out on the weekends when you’ve had one too many and it would take a lot of energy to open up a wallet to look for your card.

The Phone Case with the Bling:

If you insist that your phone not only deserves to be safe but also deserves to be decked out in all its glittery glory, then you are mostly likely as loud and proud as your case. You are probably the confident and independent fashionista. You walk around campus with a little strut and bounce in your step and the wind in your hair. You sport the latest trendy pieces of clothing and somehow you make them look cute and casual. Naturally, the over-the-top glittery phone case, which would look obnoxious on anyone else’s phone, just looks like it’s always belonged in your bright bag.

The Classic Guy Phone Case:

Let’s make a list: if your phone case is a solid color, minimal design, and perhaps a sports team of some sort located in the center of the case, then you are mostly likely the classic Boston College guy. Your phone is used to group text the guys because you’ve got to keep each other updated on who’s buying the beer this weekend, checking the scores of your favorite teams, and maybe checking in with Mom from time to time. You try to be all about the parties and alcohol, but we know you’ve got a soft side for Mom!

The Droid or Windows Phone Case:

“The brick,” “indestructible,” maybe even go as far as to say “useful” and “childproof.”  This phone belongs to you if you are the type of person who doesn’t conform to the masses. You went with the phone that is a little less slick and less popular because a) you don’t want to deal with the constant upgrading and changes, b) you have had one too many bad experiences with the dainty, fragile phones, or c) you genuinely just don’t care! You probably love the apps just as much as the rest but hey, you aren’t willing to give up your sanity for compatibility! And now when you drop it, you don’t have to worry because that bad boy is not going to break.

The Weird Animal Phone Case:

Finally, we have animal phone cases. You are an outgoing and talkative person. You most likely can talk to someone you’ve only spoken to twice and make them your best friend. By the end of a night out, you leave the party or bar or club having made another ten friends. And you most likely have the phone case that screams approachable! This phone case of yours probably has a cute animal on it with big rosy cheeks or a cute little smile. If that’s not your style, then you probably have one with the bunny ears sticking out of the top. These phone cases are hilarious so they are a great way to start a conversation with someone new.

So what have we learned? Phone cases are more than just something to protect our phones; they let us express ourselves in a subtle way. Whether we realize it or not, the phone case we pick can tell others quite a lot about ourselves. It has become an integral part of how we present ourselves to the world.

Want some advice on the best places to go to buy a new case? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Amazon
    1. We all love Amazon, and it’s great because they have all types of cheap and reliable cases, and I can tell you from personal experience that I have received all my orders.
  2. Skinit
    1. Skinit.com is good if you don’t want a phone case and just want to give your phone a little personality.  These cool “skins” lay on top of your phone, giving it just a little extra personality
  3. Best Buy and the Apple store
    1. You can always count on these classic shops having the latest accessories and technology for your phone, but, of course, you need to be prepared to pay a little more.
