A Weekend Without My iPhone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It is not a shocking fact that today’s college students are addicted to their phones. I don’t think I have ever walked across campus without checking my phone at least once. As the title of this article suggests, I had a somewhat traumatic experience the other weekend. Here’s how it all went down:

I was out with my friends doing our typical Friday night routine, when the worst possible thing happened. I dropped my phone in water. Completely submerged, and when I took it out it was completely dead. I wish I could say I was calm, but I’m pretty sure I looked like a crazy person.

Long story short, I tried and failed to save my phone. I accepted the fact that I would need to replace it, but I couldn’t get to the Apple Store until Sunday afternoon. How was I going to survive an entire weekend at BC without a phone? I was forced to become the super clingy friend every time we left the room, because I had no way of finding them again. That, on top of not being able to have constant access to social media, was a little bit of a shock to my system.

It was a little ridiculous how lost I felt without my phone, and all of my friends agreed that they never would be able to go a weekend without their phones. As much as I never want to experience this again, I did feel a little proud that survived an entire weekend without mine.

There is literally always someone telling us to unplug because of the multitude of ways the addiction to our phones is ruining our health, yet we don’t listen. It may seem difficult, but give your phone a break. Start small and leave your phone in your room when you go to the library. Hopefully, you will start to realize that you will survive without checking Snapchat after every sentence you read. Imagine how relaxed you will feel without your phone buzzing every thirty seconds.
