Weekend Travel Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It is always fun taking advantage of a long weekend to visit friends and family or explore a new place. However, traveling can be exhausting and at times stressful! If you are planning on take trip away from the Heights for the weekend, look towards some of these tips to alleviate some unnecessary anxiety and travel mishaps! Follow these tips below to make your weekend trip easy and stress-free!

1. Do Your Homework In Advance

If possible, get all your assignments done before you leave! Nothing is worse that hopping off a plane at Logan on a Sunday afternoon with a long stay in O’Neill looming in your far too near future. By getting ahead on your work, it will make your weekend more enjoyable and ensure you can get a good nights sleep on Sunday to avoid jetlag and overtiredness from weekend travels.

2. Utilize the Electronic Boarding Pass

If you have the option, have your boarding pass emailed or texted to your phone. It saves you the hassle of having to print a boarding pass and potential of losing it once printed. Plus, you look super tech-savvy when scanning the barcode at security and when boarding the plane!

3. Bring A Carry-On

I was once stuck in an airport for four hours waiting for lost luggage. Don’t let this be you. Choosing to carry your luggage on the plane versus checking it much less of a hassle. It also forces you to prioritize what you really need for your trip and what don’t really need.

4. Dress Minimally

My least favorite part of traveling is security. Being a germ freak, the fact that I have to take off my shoes and walk barefoot on a cold tile floor where many other feet have passed is less than desirable. This being said, opt for shoes that are easy to take on and off. I steer away from shoes such as tall riding boots and prefer flats that are simple to slide on and off. The same goes for accessories—avoid anything that can set off metal detectors such as statement jewelry or chunky watch.  If you are in a crunch to make your flight, nothing is worse than being slowed down at security. It makes a difference to breeze through the line by dressing smart.

5. Bring a Book

I often forget how long my 2 ½ hour flight back to Nashville can feel. Although I always carry my laptop with me, it is often on low battery power or I cannot get the Wi-Fi to work at the airport or on the plane. I have learned after hours upon hours of boredom that it is always a good idea to bring some reading material. Borrow a book from a friend or grab some magazines at a store in the airport—either way you will be happy you did!

Next time you take a weekend trip, think in advance! Hopefully these tips make your next weekend trip easy and stress-free.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
