Top 5 Best & Worst Staircases at BC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Stairs seem to legitimately define the authentic BC experience. Despite our general love-hate relationship with climbing the stairs, here is a list of the best and worst staircases on our campus!

Best

1. Amphitheater outside of Stokes

These stairs are the superior option for those looking to get from CoRo to Stokes.  They are fantastic because taking them allows you to have a short moment for contemplation, or to people watch.

2.  Bapst

We all need an intense study session occasionally. If studying at Gargan Hall tickles your fancy, you know that the stairs leading up to it are just as lovely. These stairs really prepare you for your study session: the vaulted ceiling evokes in one a sense of importance, but the space is also serious and beautiful.  When you finally finish your work, walking down this staircase is a symbol of triumph.

3. St. Mary’s Hall and Ignacio

These stairs are the cheeky cousin of the Million Dollar stairs.  They serve similar purposes, but these stairs are a little more utilitarian and a little older.

4. Maloney

At BC, there are major staircases and minor staircases.  Major staircases are like aortas to minor staircases’ capillaries.  The stairs in Maloney, like the many minor staircases, can seem a little underwhelming.  But look again!  People who take the stairs in Maloney are definitely not lazy, especially if they are traveling up.

Worst

1. O’Neill

If you’re even a little bit lazy, these stairs are not your friend.  To get from lower to upper, you can use the elevator in Maloney hall then take these stairs.  This staircase is maddening because it is the last mini-exertion you have to make on your way to class.  To add to this, this staircase is awkwardly wide and a little gritty.

2. Upper

The stairs to get to Upper are not a fun time.  Getting to the foot of these stairs is always a “so close, yet so far away” moment.  There’s always a couple of athletic freshman zooming up and down these stairs judging how out of breath you are.

3. Stairs in Mac

Mac is the building version of the board game “Chutes & Ladders.”  I find a new staircase twice a week, but I can’t actually keep track of where each goes.  Everyone has her own secret passage in this building, but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier to navigate for the uninitiated.

4.  Stokes Quad to Fulton

These stairs are very useful, but they’re crooked and maybe a little too steep.  They also get very crowded in-between classes, which is never a good time.

5. Million Dollar Stairs

Although there will always be days when the stairs are the bane of your existence, now you can choose your path wisely!
