Survival Guide to Going Out in the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As the weeks continue to pass, the temperature seems to drop more and more. Just like every year, winter is coming full force, complete with all the snow, cold temperatures, and chilling winds that would make any girl want to snuggle in her bed on a Friday night with Netflix. Every winter there’s always the dilemma of trying to look hot and not look like an bundled-up Eskimo, but also not trying to get hypothermia. Problematic, no? Fear not, here’s your guide to tackle the party scene and not sacrifice your warmth!

Wear a jacket… and not your best one.

You would think this was a given… but you’d be very surprised. It is 100% worth it during the cold winter months to throw on that jacket and bring it with you. When you get to the party, find a spot for you and your girlfriends to put your coats and keep an eye on them for the rest of the night. Hide your jacket somewhere not super easy to reach, like under a couch or in a corner; the harder it is to find, the lower the chance of it being taken. Important note: bring a jacket that if you lost it, it would not be the end of the world. This “disappearing act” seems to happy every once in a while at parties so bring an old, cheap, “whatever” jacket, not the $200 leather jacket you splurged on. You’ll thank me later.

Avoid dresses and skirts… without tights and leggings!

Pants and leggings are 100% the way to go during the winter months. If you have on skinny jeans and need the extra warmth, you can even wear a pair of tights or leggings underneath. If you are really dying to wear a skirt or dress, tights are a must… you could even wear two pairs and it wouldn’t look any different. Nude tights are a great way to pull this off! Also invest in a pair of leggings with an extra inner lining of fleece… your life will be changed forever. Exposing your bare legs to the cold wind is going to leave them looking dry and ashy, as well as leave you feeling cold to the bone.

At all costs, avoid the heels and embrace the boots.

This goes without saying, but heels plus snow does not equal a good time. Throw alcohol into the equation and it’s a big old slushy, sliding, awkward mess. Boots are your friend here! Combat boots, booties with a heel, and leather boots, especially with a super warm pair of socks (I suggest cashmere!) underneath can definitely keep your toes warm!

Keep these tips in mind when you’re taking on the cold weather in the next upcoming weeks and you will continue to look hot even as the temperature drops!

Blake is a senior at Boston College and is pursuing Biology and Pre-Med, as well as the perfect slice of pizza. She is so excited to be a co-Campus Correspondent along with Emily this year! As well as being a writer for Her Campus BC, she is also a member of the Girls Club Lacrosse team, the Public Health Club, and is a physics tutor on campus.
I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
