Songs for Loving Yourself This Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Susan Lipsett and Liz Nelson once said, “Love yourself, for if you don’t, how can you expect anybody else to love you?”  Valentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to showing your feelings to everyone you love, so why not show yourself some love, too?!  Here is a great list of songs all about girl power and loving yourself for who you are.  It’s also a great playlist for getting ready for a singles’ party or even just to make you feel great in the morning.  This Valentine’s Day, cherish your significant other, and maybe send some flowers to your parents.  However, make sure to remember how fantastic you are as yourself, with or without big dinner plans and obnoxious stuffed animals.

1.  “Pretty Girl Rock” – Keri Hilson

“Don’t hate me ‘cause I’m beautiful” has been echoing in our ears ever since the first time we watched Bring It On, but the statement couldn’t be more true!  Hilson’s song reminds us that we are awesome and that other people may hate us for being awesome, but there’s nothing wrong with a little confidence.

2.  “The World Should Revolve Around Me” – Little Jackie

Little Jackie takes a more direct approach to loving herself in this song, and the message is still crystal clear: “I know I rock, and what I got is hot…I don’t need you around I know I rock.”  As strong, beautiful collegiettes, we don’t need anyone telling us that we are less than perfect.

3.  “I Look So Good Without You” – Jesse James

This might be my favorite break-up song, as it’s a perfect example of how amazing you can feel all by yourself.  She feels hotter, she feels more independent, and she’s noticing things about herself that she never could with a boyfriend.  But post-break-up or not, this song makes you feel and look just as good as she probably does.

4.  “Video” – India.Arie

A little random and less well known, this song is the epitome of preaching imperfection is still perfect.  She gives a voice to the “real girl”, who doesn’t always want to shave her legs or even get out of bed in the morning.  She sings, “I know our creator didn’t make no mistakes on me, my feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see.” We are who we are, and that’s an absolutely gorgeous thing.

5.  “Sexy and I Know It” – LMFAO

As ridiculous as it is, this song is great. Starting off your night getting ready to this song can basically guarantee you will leave knowing you’re hot, knowing people are going to notice, and knowing you’re going to have a great night. A guilty pleasure perhaps, but we all probably should love ourselves as much as LMFAO does (maybe with more clothes on though).

6.  “Beautiful” – Christina Aguilera

This list wouldn’t be complete without this one last, cheesy song. Christina Aguilera’s famous ballad about loving yourself for exactly who you are, no matter what anyone else says, is a timeless message, albeit overused, but could not be exempt. The proof is in the hook: “I am beautiful, no matter what they say, words can’t bring me down”.
