The Sex Files #28: She Said WHAT About Sex?!?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Ok, guys. So many of us know the basics: Alcohol can give a guy “whiskey dick.” The G-spot is a notorious place on a woman that gives her incredible sensations. There are many erogenous zones on a person’s body, including the ears, inner thighs, and butt. But did you know that you could get STI from getting a tattoo or a body piercing? Did you know that between 4 and 8 percent of eighteen year-olds in the United States identify as homosexual or bisexual?

There are many things about sex and sexual health that we’re unaware of, simply because there is so much to know! Some of us just “get to the point” if you will – and love having sex without really considering a lot of the facts. Others prefer not to engage in the act, and may not be up to speed on sexual trivia as a result. And still others are sexual gurus who enjoy learning about sexual health, but may have missed out on a recent study.

Regardless of who you are, learning more about sexual health can be a great thing – it may spice up your sex life, remind you of those seemingly unimportant facts you learned in Sex Ed, or, if you are not having sex, learning about sexual health will give you an awareness of your own body if you ever decide to “do the deed” in the future.

Here are some really interesting facts we’ve gathered about sex and sexual health. Some of these facts may make you laugh; others may prompt you to take another look at how you view sexual health altogether. Without further ado, did you know:

That a woman who is sexually active and NOT using contraception has an 85% chance of becoming pregnant within a year?

That in one hour, the average sperm can swim seven inches?

That most women experience a peak in libido just before their period?

That latex condoms are biodegradable?

That 15-24 year olds account for one half of new STI cases each year even though they represent only one quarter of the sexually active population?

That semen contains cholesterol?

That ten percent of all births in the United States are to mothers aged 19 or younger?

That almost one third of all women over 80 years old still have sex with their significant other?

That most men under 40 years of age can achieve an erection in less than 10 seconds?

That the demographic which has the highest rate of HIV infection worldwide is straight women?

* * *

How many of you knew those ten facts?! If you didn’t, it’s okay. We didn’t either!

Boston College Students for Sexual Health is all about sharing the facts about sexual health, and it is our mission to provide our friends and colleagues at BC reliable sexual information.

If you’d like to learn MORE about sexual health while simultaneously having a fun night playing Bingo to win sexy prizes, feel free to join us at Roggie’s in Cleveland Circle on March 14th at 8:00pm to play Sexual Health Bingo! This event is held each semester during the school year, and it is a great opportunity to learn more about sexual health while having a great time (and a drink or two, if you are 21+, but don’t drink too much – you wouldn’t want to get “whiskey dick!”)
