Moving Out Doesn’t Have to be Painful

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Finals week is bad enough on its own, but spring finals mean we have to completely pack up our dorm rooms for the year. Personally, moving out is a whole lot easier than moving in because you don’t need to set things up and spend hours arranging everything. However, you have no other obligations at the beginning of the year, so you can focus on getting everything just right in your room. Amidst the flurry of studying, papers, and exams, it can feel overwhelming to pack the contents of your room into a bunch of cardboard boxes. If you have a plan ahead of time, you can make the whole process almost pain free. Follow these steps for the easiest move out possible!

Don’t just throw things into boxes

Go through everything first. Throw out anything you know you will never look at again. There is no need to lug a ton of miscellaneous things home to realize you are never going to use it. Save yourself the hassle (and space in the car) by cleaning now.

Sort through your closet

Maybe it’s just me, but every semester without fail there are so many things in my closet that I have not even considered wearing all semester. If this is not just a ‘me problem’, think about separating everything you don’t wear into one bag so you know what to leave at home. Or if you know you truly are never going to wear it again, consider donating it to an organization like the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Pack a little at a time

Take a study break and pack a suitcase or two. If you break up your packing into pieces, you won’t even realize the work you’re putting into it. However if you try to do it at the last minute you are going to be exhausted and in a very bad mood.

Know where you are putting things

You shouldn’t just focus on getting everything ready to leave, you also should think about how you are going to unpack it all when you get home. If you’re storing it all for the summer, think about how difficult it will be in the fall if all of your possessions are haphazardly in half a dozen boxes. Each box should contain things that go together, like stationary, kitchenware, or cleaning supplies. Also, try to separate your clothes by season, so you don’t have to do it later.

Leave the decorations for last

Finals leave us all exhausted, sad, and irritable and after a miserable day of studying you retreat to your room. If your room looks like a prison cell instead of the cozy abode you’ve made for yourself, you are going to feel even worse. Leaving some photos and wall decorations up will cheer you up and make you feel a little less homesick.

Her Campus BC wishes you the best of luck as you finish up the school year! Stay strong, it’s almost summer!
