Inaccurate Expectations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As the academic year comes to the end, I have prepared a list of false expectations.

1. Early Classes

When registering for your classes in the summer, there is a high chance that u think it’s possible to make that 8 am class. I mean, in high school you had to wake up around 6, so getting an extra hour of sleep seems pretty nice. Let me tell you: Do not do it. You will not be able to wake up before 8 am and you will complain every single day. To be honest, it becomes hard to make your 10 am and even possibly your 11 am.

2. Independence

In most cases you won’t be attending a college that’s close to your home. For this reason, you may think that you are now an independent college student who can do anything and everything by yourself. Wrong. You will call your mom when trying to do laundry the first time. But don’t worry; there will be three other students on the phone with their mothers as well. (PS. it is ok to wash everything in one load!)

3. Coffee

Before college, I had never consumed a cup of coffee on my own. Despite, the attractive smell, the mere sip always seemed to disgust me. After one year of college, I did not know how I functioned without ever drinking coffee. The drink has now become a staple in my everyday routine.

4. Partier

Since you are a college student, you are basically an every weekend partier, right? Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not the case. While some people do manage to go out every night, every weekend…if you want to do well in classes, this is not possible. While living at college does bring many new opportunities to go out with friends, it also teaches you how to manage your social and academic life.

5. Easy Course

With your experience in 10 AP classes, you may think that you are super prepared for college classes and the workload. I’m sorry to tell you, that this is probably not true. No amount of AP classes in high school will truly prepare you to be a successful college student. It may help, but don’t think you will have an easy time. A good grade comes with a lot of work!

6. Workout

A new change in your life normally evokes a feeling of motivation and eagerness to workout. While your workout routine may last the first few weeks of school, don’t be disappointed if the motivation starts to run out as the semester continue. Your academics, studying, and extra-curricular activities will start to pick up and you will have less time to make it to the gym. Keep in mind that midterm week seems to last for a month.

College has certainly taught me a lot… especially how false our preconcieved notions can be!

Adrianna is a freshman majoring in psychology on a pre-med track at Boston College. She is really passionate about health and fitness and is trying to make it in Boston as a New York Sports fan. She can be found yelling at the TV a little too loudly when hockey is on, eating honey crisp apples, drooling over dylan o brien, or convincing people, that despite her 5'0 height, she is really 18 years old.
Blake is a senior at Boston College and is pursuing Biology and Pre-Med, as well as the perfect slice of pizza. She is so excited to be a co-Campus Correspondent along with Emily this year! As well as being a writer for Her Campus BC, she is also a member of the Girls Club Lacrosse team, the Public Health Club, and is a physics tutor on campus.
