The Hollywood Heights: BC Buildings Imagined as Celebrities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s no secret that the buildings on BC’s campus are nothing short of picture perfect. Step into a campus bookstore, or simply open your Instagram feed during a sunset, and you’re sure to see enough images of Gasson to send as postcards to your grandma weekly for your next four years. Even though none of them talk, each building or structure’s design and history gives it its own distinct personality. Because I have clearly watched too many hours of E! True Hollywood Story, I thought it would be fun to imagine these buildings and their respective personalities as if they were celebrities.

Gasson is without question the Beyoncé of the Boston College campus. Standing tall and strong, Gasson looks out over all the smaller, less photographed buildings with an air of superiority, but never arrogance, like Beyoncé does to fellow musicians. While Bey outshines all of her contemporaries with her angelic vocals and inhuman dancing proweress, Gasson literally outshines everything and everyone that surrounds it, because it’s the only building lit up by headlights. Others, like Stokes and Devlin, might try to compete, but even they know they can never reach the heights of the Queen B, Gasson Hall.

Bapst – The oldest and quietest building of them all is just like the legendary Morgan Freeman. He might not be as bright, shiny, and flashy as other celebrities just like the aforementioned Beyoncé, but that’s okay. He doesn’t need to be. Like Bapst, he’s built up enough of a reputation over the years to have earned respect and reverence to last him till the very end. After years of being the star, he’s content with sitting back and letting someone else get all the attention.

Alumni Stadium – The pinnacle of athleticism on BC’s campus represents none other than Matthew McConaughey. Alumni seems to be in a constant state of optimism and happiness similar to Matthew’s ever-present smile. Whether we win or lose, and regardless of the weather, good old Alumni always provides excitement and a good time. I’d like to imagine that jogging on a beach with McConaughey and his dog is a similar experience.

Stokes HallAriana Grande. My mom first discovered who the new “princess of pop” after asking me “this is Mariah Carey, right?” when Ariana’s song “The Way” came on the radio. My mom didn’t go to BC, but I’d imagine BC alumni parents assumed the space between the Fulton Quad and Mac was still the Dust Bowl (Mariah), until learning it had been replaced by the ingénue that is Stokes (Ariana).

Fulton HallJennifer Lawrence. The only building with enough guts to face Gasson head-on, Fulton isn’t afraid of a challenge. JLaw’s not afraid of movie roles that involve shooting arrows or being covered in body paint head-to-toe (I’m not sure which is scarier). She also is able to hold her own against those older and perceived better than she is, like when she defeated Meryl Streep for an Oscar.  Fulton may not be as traditionally worshipped as Gasson or some of the other structures on campus, but it’s not going down without a fight.

Lyons Hall – The site of the infamous former Rat, which was a bar before it was a dining hall, Lyons has had its’ share of wild times. But now, it’s grown up to become a serious academic building. Kind of like how George Clooney, the supposed eternal bachelor, eventually proposed to a woman who is famous for her resume in international affairs, not for partying on Hollywood Boulevard. He’s had some fun, but he’s getting older and moving to the next chapter in his life.

Walsh Hall – Like Lindsay Lohan. Walsh has seen, and is still seeing, party after party. They’re both a little worse for the wear after so many years of damage, and could probably use some updating. There are always rumors of Lohan giving up her career, and there are always rumors of Walsh being demolished. But, they’re both so beloved in their respective fields, the public eye and the BC party scene, that no one’s ready to give up on them just yet.

2150 Comm Ave – Just like the future king of England, 1-year old Prince George, the new residential building on Comm Ave might be young, but it’s the focus of lots of attention and speculation about what it’s going to be and look like in the future. It has the potential to become the best place to live on BC’s campus, but will it live up to it? I would imagine the pressure is probably greater for little George to reach his full potential, with an entire nation resting on his shoulders and what not, but in both cases, we’ll just have to wait and see!

We may not actually go to school in Hollywood, but with a campus like this, it can definitely feel like it. Next time you take a Gassongram, drink a non-alcoholic beverage in the Rat, or attend a party in Walsh, just tell your friends from home you’re rubbing elbows with the stars. They’ll never know the difference!

Victoria is a sophomore in CSOM at Boston College, majoring in Business Management with a Marketing concentration. She is also involved in the Student Admission Program and is a freshman mentor for the Compass Fellowship. When she's not at BC, you'll find her spending her days on the sand in her hometown of Rockaway Beach, a suburb of New York City. She enjoys going to concerts, traveling, watching Gossip Girl and Scandal, and pretending she's Beyoncé.
I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
