Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

For many of us, the first wave of midterms is over, and I think it’s time to start seriously thinking about Halloween. What better way is there to get into the Halloween spirit than with scary or Halloween-themed movies?

I’ve compiled two lists: one of festive, “not-so-scary” Halloween-themed movies (featuring a lot of Disney throwbacks) for those who don’t like to be terrified, and a second list… for those who do.

“Not-So-Scary”

  • Hocus Pocus (1993): Such a classic Halloween movie, if you haven’t seen it you probably should get on that right now. Don’t worry; these three witches are more hilarious than scary.

  • Beetlejuice (1988): You may find costume inspiration in this totally weird (and awesome) classic.

  • Casper (1995): Watch Casper if you cannot stand to be scared at all. You’ll probably want a little ghost best friend by the end of this movie.
  • Twitches (2005): Tia and Tamara, the sassy twins you’ll remember from Sister, Sister, discover they have magical powers! Cool! Watch Twitches Too (2007) if you just can’t get enough.

  • Tower of Terror (1997): So much terror. (Not really at all, but this will definitely get you in the Halloween spirit)
  • Scary Movie 1-5: These make fun of all the famous scary movies with some random and famous celebs, and do a pretty good job at pointing out how ridiculous they can be.

SCARY

  • Halloween (1978): Imagine babysitting alone on Halloween. Now imagine the crazed murderer Michael Myers on the loose in your town…and he’s stalking you. This movie is more than just scary scenes. The whole plot is terrifying and you’ll be on edge throughout. Probably no movie more fitting for Halloween… than Halloween.

  • The Shining (1980): This is an awesome movie, any scary movie buff will tell you that. We’re not talking a slasher movie here, the terror is mental instead of gory. “RedRum” will be haunting your thoughts for days.
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991): There are scenes in this movie for those who like to be scared way after the scary scenes are over- be ready for Hannibal Lecter to mess with you psychologically.

  • The Blair Witch Project: Is the famed Blair Witch real? You’ll find out through the homemade footage of a group friends lost in the woods as they try and figure that out for themselves.
  • The Exorcist (1973): You’ve heard of this one, no need for a description. Be warned that it’s very scary.

  • 28 Days Later (2002): An action-packed horror movie- you won’t be bored as you explore a post-apocalyptic world.
  • The Ring (2002): This is the stuff nighmares are made of…

  • The Grudge (2004): This will also haunt your dreams. Why must scary movies include scary small children?
  • Poltergeist (1982): If you like ghost stories, you’ll love Poltergeist. It’s a classic scary movie that follows a family being terrorized by a supernatural power.

  • Paranormal Activity (2007): A more modern version of Poltergeist, made more “realistic” by the “homemade-movie” technique.
