Girls Can Be Superfans, Too!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s a classic scenario, just take a second out of your busy day and picture it with me: it’s a Saturday game day, the sun is shining and the weather is perfect, there are hundreds of alums tailgating by their cars, students dressed in every form of Boston College gear imaginable, and then… there’s that one female student. She clearly hasn’t watched a play of football all season, which is pretty obvious when she yells out in the Edmonds parking lot, “What’s our record this year anyways?” Talk about frustrating! When did it become only a matter of social status to be a Superfan? What ever happened to school spirit?!

Ladies, I’m here to tell you something: It IS cool to be a female Superfan. And no, I don’t just mean to be the girl who gets thrown in the air after a touchdown. (Although from personal experience, it is pretty amazing.) But to be the girl who attends as many sporting events as possible; the girl who knows the rules to the game and doesn’t have to ask when halftime is in baseball or the 7th inning stretch is in football; the girl who is genuinely interested in the success of her school’s athletic program. I always love seeing the girl at the games who points out to her guy friends what went wrong on the play or who is able to discuss how much better we are playing this year. Have whatever opinion of this entire “#BeADude controversy” that you desire, but for me, it has only pushed me to hope for more female involvement in BC athletics and in being a fan. Why not push aside the doubters and prove how much we love our school and our athletic program?

Brad Bates, our new Athletic Director, has invigorated our athletic program and made it a great time to be a Superfan. There are more fans than ever at games, tailgates are packed even more than last year, and new additions such as Homecoming and the Eagle Walk are making this year of football and school spirit better than all the rest. And I’m not just talking about football, ladies. Check out soccer, field hockey or volleyball games, stop by a swim meet, or maybe learn about a sport you’ve been interested in but have never seen like ultimate Frisbee or water polo. We are also entering winter sports season with our hockey teams already making themselves known as a force and our basketball teams setting high hopes for a new season (and I mean both our men’s and women’s teams). There’s never been a better time to be a female Superfan at Boston College. It’s time to show the guys at BC that there’s more to us than just rocking Superfan yellow on Gameday. Let’s see us girls have the most Gold Pass points! Just a little suggestion to Steve Addazio, our head football coach, how about we add the hashtag #BeADudette to our team’s motto… It’s time for some football, ladies.
