The Chronicles of a Part-Time O’Neill Resident

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

At Boston College, the work never ends. Even when you think that you don’t have work to do, that paper you had that is due next week will soon come back to mind. This school year, I have been to O’Neill almost every single day this semester, compared to last year where I had what I considered to be a “mental allergy” to the library. Whenever I saw my friends during freshman year walking towards O’Neill and I would just laugh and say, “I only go there to print.”

Now, I am always in O’Neill, where I am currently writing this article.

But, I have learned quickly that there is a whole other culture surrounding the library.

It is understood that you can trust the stranger sitting near your stuff to watch your stuff. Why? I am completely unsure. Like hey random guy, can you watch my computer which has my entire life on it and watch everything else I need to pass college. Logical… right? Well, we’re in college so making decisions are not always our strongest suit.

Don’t bring smelly foods to the library, and if you do, sit a healthy distance away from people. The smelly foods may either trigger hunger for those around you or discomfort.

Double-fisting coffee is also acceptable

Updating your Snapchat story with the time filter and geofilters is acceptable.

The seats next to the windows on the third floor are meant for sleeping. I’ve seen many people sleep there before and I tried to sleep there once, but I couldn’t fall asleep. Maybe one day I will feel comfortable enough to fall asleep there. Some people are meant for all-nighters, and some are not.*sigh*

You must be prepared for future weather conditions. As seen from this photo, I was not prepared for the rain.

If you eliminate distractions, your library visit may be much shorter than planned. While I did miss studying with my friends, I was so much more productive studying by myself. While being with your friends may be fun, it may not be the best decision.

At least when I leave O’Neill, the view is great.
