Aphrodisiac Foods: Take Them In to “Get It In”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Ok, so who wouldn’t want to know what to eat in order to get you in the mood?  An aphrodisiac is a substance (whether food, drink, or scent) that increases your sexual desire.  These ten foods are ones that you may (or may not) have known increase your sex drive and make you just that much more satisfied.

Let’s start with the basic ones:

1.  Chocolate

This one is kind of obvious.  I mean, we do give boxes of chocolates out to our valentine on Valentine’s Day.  Chocolate has always been considered the “food of the gods” and well deserves that name.  It contains phenylethylamine and serotonin, both of which give our bodies a “feel good” sensation.  These chemicals are naturally released in our bodies when we feel happy or passionate.

2.  Oysters

Classic aphrodisiac.  Raw oysters are high in zinc, which raises sperm and testosterone production.  So girls, these may not be very helpful for us, but be sure to feed them to your boyfriend.  If you do want to share a plate of oysters with him, oysters are high in omega-3 fats, which help our general well-being.

3.  Vanilla

Vanilla is everywhere… candles, ice cream, lotions.  This is because the scent of vanilla is believed to increase lust.  Before it can even hit your tongue, the aroma will cause stimulation of your sexual sensations.  Mix vanilla into your smoothies or burn some vanilla-scented candles (although not in your dorm room) to start sensual seduction.

Now for the less obvious….

4.   Asparagus

These vegetables help stir up passion in both men and women.  They boost histamine production to levels needed to reach an orgasm.  The Vegetarian Society suggests eating asparagus for three days for the most powerful effect.  Grab some with your chicken and rice dinner at Lower on one (or three) nights if you feel like trying something new!

5.  Licorice

Date night:  dinner and a movie?  With that movie popcorn, be sure to buy some licorice as a sexy snack.  Licorice is said to increase love and lust, particularly in women.  The scent of black licorice alone has been found to increase blood flow to areas below the belt.

6.  Bananas

Alright, so not surprisingly these fruits are aphrodisiacs because of their shape.  But they also are high in potassium and B vitamins, which are necessary for sex hormone production.  Potassium is also key in muscle contraction, which will make your orgasm super intense.

7.  Chili Peppers

Chili peppers are hot!  Which is exactly what you want to be, right?  Eating these increases physiologic responses in our bodies, such as sweating and increased heart rate, similar to the sensations experienced when having sex.  Capsaisine, a component of chili peppers, is responsible for these effects.  Eat some of these and they will surely spice up your (sex) life!

8.  Almonds

Almonds have been an ancient symbol of fertility.  The aroma of these nuts arouses passion in females.  Add some almonds or Marzipan (almond-paste) to your dessert before the real after-dinner dessert!

9.  Avocado

Vitamin E in avocados helps your body produce sex hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen.  These hormones stimulate sexual responses like clitoral swelling and vaginal lubrication.  If you’re having a fiesta, be sure to add some guacamole to the mix!

10.  Honey

There is a story about the birds and the bees for a reason.  Honey promotes sexual desire in both men and women.  It contains B vitamins, which promote testosterone production, and boron, which enhances estrogen use.

Well, there you have it!  Ten foods that you should take in to help you “get it in.”  Have fun!
