21 Strange Things About Turning 21

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Last week, I accomplished the greatest, most incredible feat of my life: I turned 21.  It was a surreal experience, as I’m sure everyone else who has already left this milestone in the dust of underage drinking and fake ID hoarding (not that anyone from BC does these things) knows.  Being older and wiser, now, has allowed me to reflect on the events of the past week and realize that there are very strange things that turning 21 has done to me.  What kind of changes, you ask?  I’m happy to oblige with the 21 weirdest things about turning 21.

1. You don’t have a heart attack walking into a liquor store.

2. Being that much closer to being able to sing “22” by Taylor Swift unironically.

3. When a bouncer IDs you, your heart doesn’t drop to your stomach.

4. Rubinoff is suddenly not good enough for you and your sophisticated taste. (LOL, yeah, right)

5. There’s really only one situation where drinking before noon is socially acceptable in the real world.

6. Going out when you’re 21 is less thrilling than pre-21.

7. But it’s still pretty awesome.

8. Your fake ID is now a relic that you aren’t quite sure what to do with.

9. Is it still acceptable to like One Direction? I’m going with yes.

10. My parents got married when they were 21, so there’s that weird thing that is looming over me, now.

11. You’re left thinking “how the heck did that happen” in reference to the fact that you’re basically elderly.

12. Suddenly, you have to figure out things about wine like what a bouquet is and why a wine’s “body” is not like a human body.

13. Graduating college is really, really close. (ONE MORE YEAR! ONE MORE YEAR!)

14. Your parents’ insurance is only a guarantee for you for six more years.

15. This is the last “fun” birthday.

16. At 20 you could kind of pretend that you were still a teenager. Not the case at 21.

17. I thought I’d have my life figured out and put together by 21. I was very wrong.

18. Your friends will probably start having babies in the next five years. #HELP

19.  Realizing that Mary Ann’s isn’t as cool inside as you always thought it would be.

20. When all your friends are 21, it’s AWESOME.

21. When you think about it all, turning 21 was just as fantastic as you always thought it would be.

Cheers!
