Baby, It’s Cold(ish) Outside: Ranking NYC’s Hot Chocolate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

A tacky piece of DIY wall art on Etsy once said, “Forget love. I’d rather fall in chocolate!” Our staff couldn’t agree more.

So, here’s a ranking of MoHi and greater NYC’s best hot chocolate to keep you warm(er) this holiday season.

8.     Kitchenette

Kitchenette only made the cut because they put massive marshmallows in their hot chocolate – and because pink dominates their décor’s color scheme.

7.     Le Pain Quotidien

Yes, this chain is #basic. But, if you dine in, Le Pain’s hot chocolate comes as a cup of steamed milk with a small pot of chocolate syrup on the side. If that’s not worth ordering for the Instagram, then what is?

6.     Dean & Deluca

Their syrup tends to settle in the bottom of their cups, but nothing beats Dean & Deluca’s white hot chocolate once you give it a quick stir.  This beverage tastes much sweeter than the other options on the list, so only go for it you have a Willy Wonka-level love of sugar.

5.     Wafels & Dinges

For those of you craving a rich, syrupy flavor, this Belgian wafel cart’s hot chocolate will certainly hit the spot. Plus, you can pair it with a speculoos-covered liege wafel! Also, pro tip for coffee lovers: this favorite food truck will flavor your morning coffee with a pump of hot chocolate upon request.

4.     Community

By far the best hot chocolate option in MoHi. The chocolate maintains a tart, rich flavor, and the whipped cream always looks Instagram ready.  Michelle Obama would also totally approve this message if it were a bit healthier.

3.     The City Bakery

Was there any doubt that City would make the cut?  In February, this classic hotspot hosts its annual Hot Chocolate Festival, during which it features a new flavor each day.  Ironically, this festival has knocked down the beloved bakery’s ranking, as our editors may or may not be bitter that it’s not held year-round.

2.     Ladurée

The bougiest and (second) best in the game! Whether you’re exploring SoHo or strolling down Madison, Laduree’s hot chocolate (read as: pretty much drinkable chocolate sauce) can sooth your sweet tooth.

1.     Pasticceria Rocco

Step aside, City.  Located on Bleecker Street off of the West 4th Street subway stop, this hidden gem arguably houses the best hot chocolate in the city.  The Italian bakery never skimps on the whipped cream and boasts a variety of unique hot chocolate flavors, each of which you can pair with a massive chocolate chip cookie, creamy cannoli, and more.
