What to do about New Years

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ball State chapter.

It’s still early in 2016, so keep your enthusiasm and optimism high. If you’ve made New Year’s resolutions, great! If you haven’t – or if you’ve already broken some – then have no fear, there’s still time to get your life together. Regardless of where you’re at now, the most important thing to remember is what positive changes you can make for your future. With that being said, we have some helpful tips and resolutions to consider as you take on the new year!

1) Hit the Gym.

Whatever you hope for this year — to lose weight, to exercise more, to spend less money — you’re much more likely to make improvements than someone who hasn’t made a formal resolution. Stick to a schedule, make clear goals, and don’t be afraid to workout with others! Research suggests that working out with your friends can help you get into a better workout routine and improve daily motivation!

2) Call your family more often.

Few things will make your family happier than the fact that they hear from you regularly. Even if it’s 10 minutes every Sunday, or calling up a family member on your way to work each morning, you’ll be making their life and yours a lot brighter. And although texting can be quick and convenient, don’t forget that a short phone call is far more personal and cherished than a text (mom would agree).

3) Go outside. Enjoy Nature.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature does a lot of overall good for your mental health. If you’re looking for a way to work out in a new environment, this may be your solution. So get outside and get happy.

4) Write down your goals for the year – it helps.

You may have some vague idea of where you want to be at the end of 2016, but writing them out will remind you of the steps you need to take to accomplish those goals. Then, just in time for 2017, you’ll have to make a new list of goals so you can get cracking on those too.

5) If you can make it through the rest of January, you have a good chance of lasting a lot longer.

Many people don’t make it through January with their New Years resolutions. If you’re still on track, great! You should keep doing what you’re doing. If not, don’t give up – you may just need a new solution.
