Based on Lucille Clifton’s “poets in their bassinets”

Poets are parents to their craft

Conceiving a concept-

some planned, some purely accidental- all appreciated

As the words go to page, the poem is born

full of potential

The poet nurses the little work in progress, nourishing it with tasty imagery and descriptors until it begins to fill into form from its tasty content

Soon it reaches the rough teen years in the form of revision

It’s hard as the poet has grown attached and doesn’t want the piece to change

(But it’s a part of growing up)

Workshopping will change the poem…but that’s okay

It means the work is reaching adulthood, ready to be performed and published out in the world

Just as its meant to be.
