How to Deal: Awkward Campus Run-Ins

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Getting back to school already comes with enough stress and struggle, and worrying about running into your ex-whatever from last year is not something you want to be sweating about. Regardless of how big Auburn is, running into that one person you are trying most to avoid is inevitable in this small town.  But lucky for you, HC is here are a few tips to help you out in during those absolutely awful situations that you have been dreading!

The Ex-Boyfriend

Just rip it off like a band aid–get it over with as soon as possible. Do you know that he goes to Panda every Tuesday with his brothers? Its only stalking if you act creepy about it. Show up and stage an “accidental” run in so that you are fully prepared for what you are going to say.  Act as though it is the most natural thing in the world and get that constant fear of seeing him unexpectedly out of your mind!

The Ex-Best Friend

Y’all used to be tighter than a pair of pants worn by The Velcro Pygmies at an August band party, but something happened before the summer. Now you haven’t exactly spoken since finals week, or even before that. The best way to do deal with this awkward situation–make a date! Be the bigger person and ask her to lunch between classes or for a quick Starbucks trip in the morning. It may be a bit weird at first but it is much better than a spur of the moment run in on campus while chatting with his or her replacement. Who knows, maybe there is hope of salvaging the friendship.

The Ex-Hottie GTA

Don’t be afraid to admit this one. After a few too many drink specials last year, you thought it would be a good idea to flirt with your Biology lab TA to boost your grade, and it didn’t hurt that he was a total babe. But what happens when you realize you have computer science with him the following semester?? You sit on the other side of the room, that is what you do. Smile and give a sweet little wave the first day but don’t make a big deal out of it. Clearly the relationship had no hope–he never even made a comment about how awesome you looked in your hot outfit that night.

The Ex-One Night Stand

This is where it gets tricky…. Were you drunk? If so, just how drunk? Did he even actually see what you looked like before you snuck out of his apartment at six in the morning? Generally, the go-to move is to avoid all acknowledgement that either of you exist, much less had any form of interaction previously. Unless he ends up being your lab partner and you are 100% certain that he recognizes you too, its probably a lost cause of developing an actual relationship so just save yourself the embarrassment of attempting to say hi.
