5 Reasons to Take Up Yoga this Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

The seasons are changing and so should your exercise routine. With stress levels and colds at an all time high, be sure to tackle seasonal depression by trying out yoga. Having been practiced for thousands of years, one thing is clear: Yoga has numerous health benefits that can change the way you live. Below you will find what I consider to be the top 5 benefits that yoga has to offer for you this winter!

1. Stress Relief. Yoga teaches you breathing techniques and meditation which can be used to relax during stressful times (ahem, finals week.)

2. Better Sleep and Circulation. Better blood flow means muscle relaxation which helps aid sleep. Better blood flow to the brain also means better mental function and concentration (something we all need!)

3. Reduced Food Cravings. Do not worry about hiding behind layers and layers this winter. A study conducted by University of Washington explained that practicing yoga is also paired with better awareness and mindful eating.

4. Increase in Happiness. There is no need to encounter cabin fever this season. Recent studies suggest that people who practice yoga boost emotional health tremendously.

5. Burns Calories. Say goodbye to the treadmill. On average, yoga can burn anywhere from 150-400 calories an hour.
