How To Keep Your Brain Happy During Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

1. Keep an organized space.

Having a clean space by removing all things that are irrelevant to the task and can distract you will help you focus and get your work done more easily. Make sure you have only the things you need to work. Yes that means putting away the phone. Don’t let it clutter your space and distract you! If your bedroom isn’t organized try finding another space such as your classroom or the library.

2. Make a to-do list.

If you make a list of all the things you have to do, no matter how small, you will feel more accomplished when you check the items off your list and move on to the next task. With several tests during finals, a list will help you to keep focused on one test at a time. Prioritize what the most important and hardest tests are first. It’s better to save the easier or more manageable studying tasks for the end of the day. That way when you’re tired and less compelled to complete the hardest tasks you only have the easy stuff left. Also, if you put off the hard tasks until the last minute, you’ll be dreading getting them done all day!

3. Make time for breaks.

Give your brain a break every now and then! With all the studying you’ve been doing you deserve it!  Make sure when taking your breaks, you get away from your desk. Don’t be slumped over a textbook or computer all day. Take a short walk, look out a window–anything to give your brain and eyes a break. By planning relaxation into your day it will actually help you stay focused. You should take a 5-10 minute break for every hour of work, or a 3-5 minute break for every half hour of work. Having breaks will help you get motivated to finish the task while also giving you some time to transition your mind to the next task ahead.

4. Snacks.

Before getting into the groove of studying at the library or in your room prepare some heathy snacks!  No energy drinks or coffee, because sooner or later, you will crash. Buy some simple finger foods you can munch on such as granola bars, fruit, and water.
