How to: Get Over Your Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

We all know it, break ups really suck. Whether it was your decision or not, hurting someone’s feelings, or having your own feelings hurt, is never easy. In this day in age, technology makes it nearly impossible for us to completely avoid our exes. From texting to Twitter, Facebook to Instagram, it’s like you can never escape the bad memory of your ex. So here’s a few things to remember while going through your awful, heart wrenching, stressful break up:

  • Take them off of your social media feeds.

Yes… I mean block them on Instagram, unfollow on Twitter (block if you really feel it necessary), and remove them from your Facebook news feed. Nothing is worse than feeling like you’re doing great, and then being reminded of the past by a cute photo of him and his new girl on Instagram while you’re… still single? No. Don’t put yourself through that!

  • Fight the urge to send the text.

Maybe it’s been a little while since the break up and the memories of why you broke up are a little foggy, but remember, it probably happened for a reason. Texting is the danger zone of break ups because it hardly ever ends well. You have to remember that he may still be hurting, or he’s completely moved on, and he may not give you the response you’re looking for. Or worse, he won’t respond at all. Don’t forget about the drunk text! Make sure to have a system to avoid any unwanted conversations when you’ve downed a couple glasses of wine for the worse.

  • Try something NEW!

Try a new haircut, or find some new makeup techniques to play up your eyes. Heck! What about red lipstick? Go bold and be confident. New, and sometimes scary, experiences help you grow as a person and allow you to replace the bad memories for better ones. And even though it’s a little late to make up a new years resolution, don’t stop yourself from making and achieving new goals. Being ambitious keeps you focused and feeling accomplished!

  • Find a new hobby!

Check the school calendar for cool events coming up throughout the semester. Whether it’s a concert at Legends, Healing Arts Yoga at the Turchin Center, or making a mug in Student Union, App has a lot of affordable programs for students that are really interesting and fun to do. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet your new crush and have even more in common than your last relationship!

Upcoming low cost events on campus:

  • Tai Chi; Feb 4 at 5pm; The Turchin Center; Free for students!
  • Figure Drawing: Exploring Human Forms and Movements; Thursdays 7-9 pm (February 6 – March 6); The Turchin Center; Free for students!
  • Exercise!

I know how hard it is to motivate yourself to go to the gym and put in some good workout time. But who says that’s what you have to do? Working out doesn’t have to be a death sentence, or something you dread; you really don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own room! Pinterest has an abundance of workouts that allow you to stay inside your house (heck yeah!). Exercise has been proven to make you actually happier, even if it’s just a 10-minute workout on the floor of your bedroom. Look good, feel good, right?

  • Most importantly, remember that you are awesome!

Just because your relationship didn’t work out, you’re still a smart, beautiful, unique young lady! Don’t get discouraged or feel like you’re not good enough, because you absolutely are! Be confident, believe in yourself, and remember that you’re young! There’s plenty of time to find the perfect man who will sweep you off your feet.
