The latest edition to Boone’s dining scene is finally here and I for one couldn’t be happier. Appalachian’s student body has been patiently waiting for the opening of the Waffle House all semester. The excitement over Waffle House has only been building since December of last year when the first reports of the development came out in the local news. Since the recent Grand Opening I have not witnessed one lull in the flow of customers to this late night haven and there are many reasons for that!

Excellent customer service, from all employees.

Walking into Waffle House is almost like walking into a Moe’s except they don’t yell “Welcome” at you, they smile and say, “Hello, Welcome to Waffle House!” in the most cheerful voices you’ve heard all day. Seriously, I think I was greeted maybe 3 times by different employees the last time I went for dinner. I have this theory that the employees at Waffle House might actually enjoy their jobs and they want to make sure you enjoy your time there too.

They festively decorate for all the best holidays.

Right now in Waffle House you’ll see holiday decorations up for Christmas. There’s even a lit Christmas tree next to the signature WaHo jukebox! Some of the employees wear Christmas hats and ties and there are red and gold accents at every table. It’s hard to be in a bad mood in place filled with such holiday cheer. Even corporate Waffle House is in on the Christmas cheer; there’s a Christmas themed WaHo music video on the their website that’s worth checking out called “This is the Night.”

One word: Hashbrowns.

Although the restaurant is named “Waffle House” they might be even more famous for their ridiculously good Hashbrowns. You can order a whole plate of them if you want and your server won’t even bat an eyelash! Personally, I prefer them plain but you can choose to have yours “scattered”, “smothered”, “covered”, or a number of different combinations.

What would be an outrageous meal at any other restaurant is just breakfast at Waffle House.

The infamous All-Star Special is nothing to shy away from if you’ve got a huge craving or are perhaps rewarding yourself for studying for finals. You’ll get coffee, a waffle, eggs, bacon, grits, and toast for only a few bucks! In fact, everything on the menu is the right price for a college student’s limited budget.

You can show up in the middle of the night and they’ll still be open!

This is arguably the greatest part about Waffle House; they never lock the doors. They will be just as happy to serve you at 5am as they will at 5pm. It’s the perfect place to go for a late night meal after going out with friends and for an early breakfast before class! As of now, there is not another place in Boone where you can get a full breakfast meal (or dinner meal) at literally any time of the day or night so it looks like Waffle House wins again.

For seasoned veterans of the Waffle House scene there is no greater pleasure than being able to take someone on their first trip and make them a convert. If you’re one of those individuals that remains unconvinced of the appeal of a 24-hour breakfast restaurant you may need counseling…or just a guide to show you the way. Happy feasting, collegiettes!
