The Best Fall Break Road Trips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Fall Break is about two weeks away and surely, we’re all counting down the days. While we all appreciate the time off, it’s no Spring Break, and most people aren’t going to be jetting off to Mexico or the beaches of Florida. However, despite the break being short, that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of it. Provided you have a full tank of gas (or two), some friends and a good music playlist, a road trip can be a good option if you don’t want to stay in Boone, but you don’t want to go home.

Asheville, NC

The drive from Boone to Asheville is a little under two hours, so this might be one of the best options. It could even be a daytrip. The biggest attraction is obviously the Biltmore Estate, a gorgeous mansion built in the late 1800s. Besides touring the largest, privately owned house in America, Asheville is known for its downtown vibe. Between cool bars and shops, restaurants and museums and art galleries, Asheville won’t disappoint.

Charlotte, NC

Like Asheville, the drive to Charlotte is also just around the two hour mark. While this idea might not be appealing to you if your hometown is Charlotte, it can be fun if you’re from somewhere else. There’s a Carowinds amusement Park or you can rent a small boat to take out on Lake Norman. There’s a public market and plenty of fun walking tours.

Raleigh, NC

Raleigh is about three hours away, which makes a trip there very doable. A few hours in the North Carolina Museum of Art and then the Zac Brown Band on the 9th in the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre sounds good to me. The Carolina Hurricanes home opener game is Friday, the 10th and college students can get a discount on tickets with a valid I.D.

Atlanta, GA

So, you drove five hours to Atlanta, that’s quite a time commitment. That means you better make your trip worth it. Take a tour with Atlanta Movie Tours, they’ll show you where The Blind Side, The Walking Dead or where Anchorman 2 were filmed. Visit Atlantic Station, a wondrous haven of stores and boutiques. Call ATL-Cruzers and take a tour in an open-air smart car. Visit the Georgia Aquarium, which is actually the biggest in the country and up until very recently, the biggest aquarium in the world.

Charleston, SC

This trip, like Atlanta, just about hits the five hour mark. Stop by the Citadel and find your husband. Take The Notebook tour and see the places they filmed the movie in Charleston, relive every breathtaking moment of when you orginally fell in love with Ryan Gosling. Visit the Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon, Patriots were imprisoned here during the American Revolution. Your mother would approve of this excursion.

The drive to Nashville is about five and a half hours, so it’s not for everyone. But hey, why not live a little while we’re young and in college and allowed to do things like this. If you’ve ever watched the show Nashville then you’ve been dying to visit the Grand Ole Opry. There’s the Johnny Cash Museum and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The music scene in Atlanta is hot and the Tennessee Titans are in town over Fall Break, a little NFL football is good for the soul. Plus, who could pass up the downtown bar scene and all those honkytonks?
