5 “Secret” Student Perks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

We all know that being a Mountaineer is totally enviable in and of itself, but just in case you needed a reminder of why being an App student is so great, here are few “secret” student perks that can are totally enviable and some that can be helpful around this time in the semester.

The Writing Center

Most of you know about the Writing Center, but for those of you who don’t, the Writing Center is the place to be when you’re grade is riding on a term paper. THE place to be. It’s in the basement of the library, and it is one of App’s best kept secrets. Need your paper proofread? Done. Want feedback on an idea? Done. Have to re-do your resume and need help? Done. They offer a wide variety of services, and are always eager to help. You can make appointments online at https://appstate.mywconline.com

The App House & App Loft

This is one perk that you HAVE to take advantage of at least once. Appalachian owns the App Loft in New York City and the App House in Washington, D.C.  and provides housing in both of the cities at a very good, discounted price. The Loft is located in a prime spot in downtown Manhattan and is open to students, faculty and alumni. It is a hostel style set up, so the price is super cheap. Where else can you stay in the Big Apple for $35 a night? If you’re not about the bunk bed life, you can always get a private room at the Loft for $100 a night – still very reasonable!

The App House is a little different. It is used as a hub for undergrad, grad and recent alumni to take advantage of the awesome internship opportunities that D.C. has to offer. A lot of new graduates who land jobs in the capital use the House as a place to stay while they try to find their way around the city, and get a feel for their new home. While it isn’t as cheap as the Loft, it is a better option if you’re looking for a place for more than a few days. Check it out at http://dc.appstate.edu/asu-in-dc-program-information

DVD Rental Service

That’s right. If you’re an Appalachian student, you can rent movies from the library for FREE. “Movies from the library” sounds like the last thing you want to checkout, I’m sure, but you can rent any kind of movie with this service, as long as it’s available. They have anything from Friends with Benefits to documentaries! For more info visit http://library.appstate.edu/find/movies

The Career Development Center

Again, this is one that many of you may know of, but do you know just how much they actually do? This service is located on the third floor of the JET Building. They help with cover letters, resumes, job searches, interview skills and so much more – all for free. Why not make an appointment and perfect your resume to ensure that you’ll get your dream job? The Club Directory

This last, but certainly not least, service is a little different than all of the others. The Club Directory is done by CSIL and has a full, complete list of all of the clubs on campus. Interested in getting involved? Check out the directory. Not only does the directory provide contact info for each club, it is also updated every so often with big events and news from each club – https://csil.appstate.edu/club-directory.
