Six Fall Fashion Must-Haves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

When winter decided to arrive early a few weeks ago, I frantically rummaged through my closet looking for my cold weather clothing.  Sifting through my fall clothes in search of attire more appropriate for the ongoing snowstorm, my heart broke at the thought of having to whip out my hideous snow boots already.  Was it already the time of year to pack up my stylish booties?  Would I never get to wear the brand new fall dresses I just purchased?  Luckily, the weather turned out to be a fluke.  The leaves (on the few surviving trees) have changed colors, and it seems like autumn has finally settled in.  So now that Mother Nature has got the season right, what about you?  Here are the must-have pieces for this fall, chosen by your fellow Amherst girls.

Jackets! Because it is cold outside…

Blazers:
A blazer is an essential item in every girl’s wardrobe, especially in the fall.  Pair it with jeans and flats to dress up a casual outfit for class, or throw on a pair of heels for a dressy dinner date.  And of course, for all of you girls who are interviewing for jobs, a blazer is a sophisticated choice. For this fall, chose darker colors such as navy blue or black.

Military Jacket:
A military jacket is great for a stylish yet comfortable look.  Good for weathering the chilly fall breeze, it adds a bit of edge to any outfit.  Pick a neutral color, such as beige or olive, so that it is easy to match and won’t get old, even if you are constantly wearing it.

Boots! Because we like looking cute while we trek around…

Over-the-knee Boots:
Boots are a hands-down fall basic.  Since I’m short, I’m a big fan of heeled boots.  Unfortunately, the Amherst campus is not made for such shoes.  So how do you get length in your legs without the extra height?  Say hello to over-the-knee boots.  Pick a snug-fitting pair with minimal design; the solid block of color will make your legs look even longer, without the need for a heel.

Wedged Ankle Booties:
While heels may not be the best mode of transportation, wedges are definitely doable.  Wedge Ankle Booties are another great way to lengthen your legs while keeping your feet covered.  Pair them with bright tights and a pair of high-waisted shorts for an ultra chic look (think Blair Waldorf status).

Dresses! Do we even need a reason?

Belted Dress:
One of the best things about fall (besides pumpkin pie and butternut squash soup…besides being a fashionista, I’m also a major foodie), is that it becomes acceptable to wear tights again even though you aren’t a six year-old girl anymore.  A belted dress with tights gets you to the Socials without freezing your legs off on the walk over…it’s a win-win no matter what.

Long-sleeved Dress:
Another great way to look stylish this fall is with a long-sleeved dress.  A long-sleeved dress is perfect for the daytime or dinner out with friends.  Pick one that is made out of a thin, jersey material so you can throw an extra sweater or jacket over it without the fabric in the arms bunching up.
