Review: Dirty Mocs “A Christmas Album”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

If you’re anything like me, new Christmas music makes you pause.
Sure, there are some gems—especially Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”, but too often they’re really annoying and/or commercial (my editor/roommate has been tormenting me with “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid for weeks).

Within the first twenty seconds of listening to Dirty Moc’s “A Christmas Album,” however, my worries were put to rest.
Janie Laursen and Jesse Fried’s debut album has a little bit of everything—from traditional carols to modern songs to some hidden bonus tracks. Best of all, their music is bound to put a smile on your face.  There’s something about the melodica/kazoo combo that brings back the joy of childhood Christmases.  The medium especially lends itself to songs like “Let It Snow” and “Santa Baby,” which I’m actually finding pretty addicting.  “Santa Baby,” in particular I think should’ve been written for the kazoo.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but one of the hidden tracks really allows you to pause and think about the true meaning of Christmas. Just saying.

If you love Christmas and laughter and everything good, I highly suggest you get your hands on “A Christmas Album.”  Contact Janie (jlaursen12@amherst.edu) for your own copy.
