Misconceptions about the South

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Although I cannot speak for an entire region of the US, as a proud resident of GA, I would like to address some crazy things I’ve heard my fellow Amherst students say about the South.

Misconception #1 : Everyone in the South has a Southern accent.

If you live anywhere close to a big city, in fact, you probably won’t! I’m from metro Atlanta, and I can tell you I rarely hear a Southern accent unless I go to South Georgia. Furthermore, having a Southern accent does not mean that you’re less educated in any way.

Misconception #2: All Southerners are conservative.

Not true, in fact, if you decide to go to Amherst College, you’re probably not.

Misconception #3: Every Southerner enjoys country music.

Some do, and more power to them, but a lot of us enjoy indie rock and pop just like the rest of the country.

Misconception #4: The Atlanta Falcons are meh.

They are a good team. They almost had the Patriots, and I’m still salty.

Misconception #5: Other than hot, there’s no other temperature.

It’s not always hot in the South. Once a year, it snows!!!

Bonnie is a sophomore at Amherst College. Even though she studies statistics, she is interested in technology, pediatric medicine, dentistry, education, and public health.  She spends most of her day trying out new things, like eating an ice cream cone while biking or looking for ways to climb onto campus building roofs. "All over the place" would be the best way to describe her.
