Oh Joseph Gordon Levitt or JGL as your fans know you, there are so many great things to say about him. I was always a fan of his work from 10 Things I Hate About You, Inception, to my personal favorite 500 Days of Summer. When I found out he was coming Washington, D.C for HitRECord on the road I bought a ticket right away and counted down the days until the show. I had no idea what to expect whether it was just going to be a movie, a performance, or even just watching JGL strut his stuff in one of his infamous skinny ties (and boy does he do that well).
As soon as I got out of by 5:30 block, I sprinted back to my room with the motivation to finally see one of my favorite actors live. I was already running late to Warner Theatre in Metro Center. When I got to the theatre, Levitt captured the audience’s attention with his boyish charm. Dressed casually, he explained to the audience how we was going to film the whole show and for them to keep their cameras on. I was surprised because this was definitely the opposite of what most shows have told me to do in the past. He explained that he wanted “records” for his website for future collaborations. Like his website, he made the show an interactive experience. For actor that has starred in so many hit movies, he was just an “averageJOE”. Levitt showed introduced various collaborations that combined art, animation, music, film, and voice over acting. Though he was entertaining as a host, the show relied on audience participation. People sang, dance, read, and tweeted at the actor. Levitt planned each part of the show, but had a relaxed enough setting to improvise.
Yes, there was no kind of plot or performance, but I think that’s what makes the show have its own uniqueness. I’ll admit the room was filled with googly-eyed women who just came to see the actor. For most people this type of event may not be for them, which is understandable. I think it is smart that the actor is using his own fame especially this event to catapult his company, but what celebrity hasn’t done that? The show was a great experience and Joseph Gordon Levitt can expect to see me the next time he is D.C.
