With people’s typical activities still on pause from COVID-19, here are some worthwhile things to do with your limited freetime from school!

My best investment for quarantine was a foldable movie screen. There was a period for about two months where my neighbors and I would get beach chairs out in my driveway and sit and watch YouTube, movies or even play Jackbox Party Games on my Switch (I recommend Party Pack 3!). It’d be perfect for a Halloween movie marathon with blankets outside. If you’re in DC, as long as you can find an outlet and it’s dark enough outside, you can do this wherever!

Supplies– Projector, Screen, Extension Cord, Speaker (there is one in the projector, but it is quiet), something to place the projector on (I used a foldable table)

However, if you maybe don’t have the space for this or don’t want to go out and buy some of the supplies, check if there are any drive-in movies around you. A little amusement park near me called Adventureland did a few drive-in movies this summer. The one my friend and I absolutely had to go to was Glee- The Concert Movie. It was $35 each, but it came with dinner, popcorn and two bingo cards. It was definitely one of my favorite nights this summer.

Supplies– A car

Since we couldn’t exactly go out for my birthday as it was the height of corona (April 12),  my family and I did a virtual escape room. It had printable and online parts that work together for the same puzzle. Ours was Alice in Wonderland themed, but I imagine you could probably find one in whatever theme you’d like. It was fun, but it’s a relatively quick activity, so I wouldn’t plan a whole day around it.

Supplies– Computer, Somewhere to Print

Some things are starting to open now as cases decline, especially here in New York. One thing that recently opened was in-person escape rooms. My friends and I went to one a few days ago and… we didn’t get out. We tried our best. I thought the in-person one was a lot more fun, so if you feel comfortable and have the option available, I say go for it!

As fall comes around, farms are a great option to get into the spirit. There are farms available within driving range to a lot of people, so it’s a fun day trip. Apple cider slushies and pumpkin bread are some of my favorites.

If you are looking to do some professional activities to help boost your resume, LinkedIn learning is a great way to learn some skills and add to your repertoire. I’ve been wanting to try Pixar’s Animation classes, personally. You get one month free, so use it as much as you can then!

Supplies– Any device with WiFi!

Another activity that will not only be a resume booster,  but money in your pocket is an Etsy or Redbubble Shop. These can range from extravagant crafts to simple designs that generate passive income. The holidays are rolling around, so Halloween and/or Christmas crafts would be a great opportunity to grow your business. For redbubble, illustrations for things like bags, pillows, or laptop stickers will sell well!

Supplies– Whatever you need!

Remember, with all these activities, safety is the number one priority. Please wear a mask if you are going out! Have a great fall in or out of D.C.!
