A Thank You Letter To The Roommate I Hated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Thank you for being you. Up until our time together, I had never had a poor roommate experience. I learned that life is not made up of absolutes.

Thank you for showing me who my true friends are. I had to rely on talking to many other people to get advice for dealing with conflicts we had. It was nice to see how many friends were willing to listen and cared about my wellbeing.

Thank you for waking me up every morning. Your 8am alarm allowed me to start my days sooner, accomplish more, and really be able to live out each day to the fullest.

Thank you for forcing me to explore new places both on and off campus. Constantly trying to avoid our room to avoid tension allowed me to see and experience many new sights.

Thank you for helping me to stay fit. Part of staying out of the room meant spending more time at the gym, and more time working on myself.

Thank you for showing up out of nowhere when I was convinced I was home alone. It really kept me on my toes. Lesson learned: expect the unexpected.

Thank you for not respecting my privacy. These days there is no real privacy on the Internet, so why not take it away from me in real life too.

Thank you for teaching me to appreciate home more. There is nothing like being able to freely lay in your bed without having to sleep with one eye open and worry that you’re being judged.

Thank you for helping me to appreciate being an only child. I now value my alone time much more, and understand that it was a formative part of my upbringing.

Thank you for confirming my beliefs. While you thought I was an insecure, unhappy person, I was becoming more and more the opposite. You showed me exactly the type of person I never want to be, and confirmed that I am not.

Thank you for not returning my friendly goodbye during move-out. That lack of closure prompted me to write this letter and express myself in a way I had not tried before.

If there’s one thing we can agree on, I’m also glad this challenge presented itself. I’m passionate too, but I can express myself in a healthy way. In the words of good ol’ Bob Marley, “don’t worry, be happy.”
