A Guide to DC Cupcakes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

When it comes to cupcakes, we all know DC goes hard. Georgetown alone has three cupcakeries that battle it out for customers every day. While some may argue that one DC cupcakery is the best (cough Baked & Wired cough) each cupcakery offers its own unique twist to this three-bite delicacy.

If you find yourself in Georgetown and don’t know where to go, let me break it down for you. Georgetown Cupcake is delicious, but the lines will be long during weekend hours. If you’re a lover of frosting, try to visit the famous cupcakery during the week or have your parents send you a dozen for you birthday – you can ask them to customize any cupcake if you order ahead of time. Baked & Wired is a great place if you like atmosphere and choices. Their cupcakes have a more appealing cake to frosting ratio if you’re not into copious amounts of frosting, and if cupcakes aren’t your thing, you can get one of their many bars, brownies or quiches. They also serve amazing coffee and never have a line out the door (but they are busy). Sprinkles, originally from Beverly Hills, is a great place if you want to just sit down and enjoy a great cupcake. They offer some pretty unique flavors and because they are never crazy busy, they offer a peaceful environment for you to indulge.

Picture this: you’re in Dupont and you’re just craving a cupcake. Fear not, for right as you get off the metro you’ll spot Hello Cupcake. Their specialty is any cupcake infused with banana. They also have a scrumptious Oreo cupcake for all you Oreo lovers.

If you happen to be in the Metro Center area for your routine Forever 21 visit, make a pit stop at Crumbs. Originally from good old NYC, Crumbs has some amazing, monster-sized cupcakes in any flavor imaginable. They pack on the frosting, but it’s delicious. If you don’t feel like eating a monster cupcake, you can order an assortment of mini one-bite cupcakes ranging in flavors and themes – they’re to die for.

Finally, just in case you didn’t think Chinatown had it all, they also have their own gourmet cupcakery. Red Velvet, famous for their red velvet cupcakes, is a good pit stop if you want a pretty great red velvet cupcake. They also offer some delicious fall cupcakes that include a piece of piecrust on your frosting.
