The ABC’s of UAlbany

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

A-Albany

The city in which we attend this wonderful university, can you hear the sarcasm?

B-Bob Ford

The coach of the Men’s Football team from 1970 to 2013. The football field at Casey Stadium is named after him and so is a portion of Western Avenue.

C-Collins Circle

In the Spring and Summer you see students hanging out on this big circle in front of the podium, tanning and playing sport, in the Winter this is where students make snow-private parts.

D- Downtown Albany

Where upperclassmen live and underclassmen get scammed for whack house parties.

E-Empire Commons

The on-campus apartments where everyone wants to live so they can turn up. Only the lucky will get a spot on Empire Commons.

F-Fire Alarms

There has to be at least 5 fire alarms in the dorms and on-campus apartments a day. The local fire department is probably tired of coming to the school for false alarms and we are tired of standing out in the cold at 1 a.m. because you didn’t know your popcorn was burning.

G- Great Dane

Our mascot. GO DANES!

H- Health Center

The off campus doctor we go to when we’re sick or just want a fake excuse to not go to class. There is a shuttle that takes students there Monday through Friday.

I- Indian Quad

The quad where most Albany students get their start. Also known as the Freshman Quad, they have the best food there.

J- Jones (President Robert J. Jones)

Our school president. Fun Fact: He has a Grammy Award from singing with Sounds of Blackness.

K- Kegs and Eggs

Just watch this video and be amazed

L- Liberty Terrace

The best apartment complex to live in on campus. It’s quiet and far away from the noise on campus. There are also great views of the parking lot on one side and the Indian Pond on the other.

M- Mail Services

The most inconvenient mail system in the universe. So many students use the mail system here, but the package pick-up window is only open from noon-5 p.m. and Monday through Friday.

N- November Slump

By November everyone is ready to go home and finish off the semester.

O- Orientation

The best two days that you’ll have at UAlbany. You make so many friends that you don’t keep for the four years.

P- Podium/Podiate

Where all of the classes are held. On nice days, the men and women of UAlbany podiate, or hang out on the podium instead of go to class.

Q- 5 Quad

The ambulance service on campus. Always coming in handy.

R-ResNet

The worst internet provider on the face of the planet. Don’t you agree?

S- SEFCU

The name of the bank on campus and also the gym complex.

T- Tunnels

The best thing that ever happened to students on a cold day in Albany, even though sometimes it’s a little too hot down there.

U- Uncommon Grounds

The best coffee and bagels on campus. They need to bring it back, but in the mean time go to the one on Western Avenue at University Plaza

V- Views

No matter where you are in Albany, you’ll get really nice views of sunrises and sunsets. Just beautiful.

W- Washington Avenue

The avenue that leads to everything UAlbany. It’s our address. 1400 Washington Avenue.

X- X-Tremely Cold Weather

We’ve had it pretty good so far this fall, but years past have been brutal.

Y- Yucky Food

The food on the quads and even in the new Campus Center sucks, but if you’re really hungry it will have to do.

Z- Zenger Hall

The best hall to live in on Colonial Quad. You don’t have to leave the building to get food because the dining hall is right downstairs.

Tabia is a senior at SUNY University at Albany. She is studying Journalism with a minor in History and Africana Studies. She would love a career in Journalism as an Arts and Entertainment Reporter. She wants to go to graduate school in her native New York City or Boston, Massachusetts. In her spare time she likes to dance, sing, watch new shows on Hulu and read Her Campus articles. She is currently the Podium Perspective Director and a Staff Writer for the Albany Student Press and a founding member of Kappa Alpha Pi. Go Danes!
