5 Reasons Why You Should Study Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities you will ever have as a student. A lot of people worry about it – getting homesick, the cost of study abroad, etc. We are here to give those of you who are sitting on the fence 5 reasons why you should definitely study abroad.

1) Opportunity to Travel

Studying abroad is one of the best opportunities you will get to travel the world while you’re still young. See the different countries of Europe, taste their delicacies, backpack through Asia, go scuba-diving in Australia, and do things you could only imagine doing before. The world truly is your oyster!

2) Learn a new language

If you choose to study abroad in a country where English is not the first language, this is your chance to learn a new one. Speaking a different language is such a great skill to have, and sets you apart from the rest. You will also feel much more settled in your host country, and find it easier to meet new people.

3) Immerse yourself in a whole new culture

Living and studying in a new country means a whole new way of life too. When you are studying abroad, you’ll learn just how different other countries are from your own, but don’t shy away from the differences. Get involved in every aspect of this new culture and make your host country your home away from home.

4) Make friends from around the world

Study abroad allows you to meet people from all around the world. Not only will you meet many people from the country you’re studying in, but you are also likely to meet a lot of other international students too. Just think of all the trips you can take now you’ve got places to stay!

5) It’s a cliché, but find out more about yourself

It sounds cheesy, but it’s true. Studying abroad really does give you some perspective, and you can find out so much more about yourself by taking yourself completely out of your comfort zone, putting yourself out there and spending up to a year in a foreign country away from everything and everyone you are used to. As Saint Augustine said, “the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”
