Meet SALT’s Molly Wilson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Agnes Scott chapter.

Meet Her Campus Agnes Scott’s Health Editor, Molly Wilson! Aside from being an amazing editor and contributor to the HC site, she is a part of Agnes Scott’s SALT committee.

What is SALT? That’s an interesting title.

SALT stands for Student Admissions Lunch Team. Monday through Friday, prospective high school students come visit campus and SALT eats lunch with them. A different group of firstyear students, generally about two or three, work each day of the week. We answer any questions the students or their parents have and generally try to give some insight as to what being a firstyear at Agnes Scott is like. Everyone on SALT is a firstyear, because we just went through the college application process last year and can relate quite well to what the prospective students are going through.

How did you become involved?

At the beginning of last semester, the admissions office sent our an email asking for applicants for SALT. I was intrigued by the name to begin with, but when I realized that I would have a chance to influence and assist high school students in their college search, I decided to apply. The application was fairly simple, involving three short answer questions. Once accepted, I participated in a group interview and then a short training process. Now, every Friday from 11:40-12:45 I eat lunch in the dining hall with prospective students and their parents.

Why did you choose to become involved?

The largest factor as to why I am attending Agnes SCott College was the positive influence of my visits to campus and the students I met. I wanted to be able to reciprocate and provide a positive experience for other prospective students.

What is most rewarding about being a member of SALT? What is most challenging?

I greatly enjoy getting to know the high school students and learning about their personal interests. From there, I do my best to provide information as to how Agnes Scott would be able to fit their interests. It is always exciting to answer a question and know that it is really helping the student make their college decision. It can be quite challenging, however. I have definitely had students who are only there because their parents made them. Sometimes they do not have any questions and do not even want to talk to me while we eat. That gets awkward. Also, sometimes the parents dominate the conversation and it is difficult to get to know and help the student. Overall, however, my lunch on Friday afternoons are quite interesting and rewarding. I normally come away feeling that I have indeed made a positive difference in the prospective student’s experience.
