6 Natural Makeup Brands That Won’t Break the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Agnes Scott chapter.

It’s difficult to make an all-natural makeup product these days. Most brands that claim to be  aren’t 100% natural because they have to use a percentage of preservatives or synthetics to maintain the quality of the product while it sits on a shelf or in the bottom of your makeup bag. While you may want to switch to natural cosmetics, they can often be super expensive because they aren’t using cheap chemicals or ingredients. Here are some brands that are good for the world and are almost as cheap as drugstore products. (See the end of the article for price scale key.)

Pacifica

Pacifica is 100% vegan and cruelty free. Their products are gluten-free and contain ingredients that are safe for both you and the environment. Their skin care is created without animal ingredients, phthalates, parabens, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, petroleum, peanut oil, triclosan, and other harmful ingredients. They strive to achieve zero waste in their manufacturing and work with local packaging companies to produce 100% recyclable packaging for the products. The brand can be found at most Targets. ($)

Burts Bees

Duh. On average, their products are 99% natural, and over half are 100% all-natural. Not sure about a specific product? Just check the Natural Bar on the side which shows the percentage of natural ingredients. The Burt’s Bees company itself is also dedicated to sustainability and is Certified Carbon Neutral. It makes great efforts to restore the water that their production displaces and send zero waste to landfills. Plus, they’re crazy about saving the bees. ($)

Alima Pure

Alima Pure attempts to make quality products with minimal ingredients and are made with no synthetic dyes, parabens, or sulfates. The products are only slightly more expensive than drugstore makeup but are never tested on animals. Crafted with a confident woman in mind, their products are made to last all day and make a global impact. To minimize waste, most of their containers are refillable. The company is 100% carbon neutral and a percent of the proceeds go to grassroots environmental organizations. ($$)

Josie Maran

While their full range can get to be a bit expensive, the basics range from $15-$25. Josie Maran uses mainly Argan oil and other plant-based oils and extracts as a base for their products. The Argan oil they use is solely sourced from all-women Moroccan co-ops that provide the women with steady incomes, educations, and safe working conditions. The cosmetic company favors fair trade practices, sustainably-sourced ingredients, and eco-friendly packaging. ($$)

HAN Cosmetics

All of HAN’s products are made in the USA and are vegan and vegetarian. The antioxidant-packed products are colored with plant, vegetable, and fruit pigments and contain all-natural preservatives. PETA approved and Leaping Bunny Certified, they never test on animals. They also have a mission to give back to their community through service projects and charitable donations. ($)

W3LL People

Because our skin absorbs about 80% of what we put on it, W3LL People is committed to making cosmetics without harmful chemicals that most products contain. They use high quality, all-natural ingredients to create professional-grade makeup. They test on humans and are cruelty free. They also make the products in small batches in the US in order to support the local economy. The ingredients are also free of any propylene glycol, petrochemicals, or petroleum by-products. ($$)

While these brands may cost a little more than your regular drugstore makeup, it’s certainly worth the extra bucks. You can feel confident in your makeup knowing that you look great and are saving the world, too.
