The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Online Television

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

The unbreakable who? Unless you’ve been completely isolated from everyone, you’ve probably heard people talking about their new favorite show, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The brand new Netflix smash hit follows Kimmy Schmidt: a woman who’s had somewhat of a bizarre and unique past. After fifteen years trapped in an apocalypse cult, Kimmy tries her luck in New York City. That’s just about the best I can describe it to you collegiettes, you’ll just have to grab your popcorn, head over to Netflix, and see for yourself what other people are saying about Kimmy Schmidt! Critics are praising the show for it’s vibrant characters and wit, and viewers are becoming just about as obsessed with it as they are with the fan favorite Orange Is the New Black, which returns this June for it’s third season.

The way viewers are watching television is seeing a dramatic shift in recent years, with most audiences actually watching programs online through companies such as Netflix, Hulu, etc. Even shows that air on television are being viewed predominantly online (Bob’s Burgers, for example).  And with shows like The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, it’s easy to see why. Content that is being put out through channels like Netflix are getting better and better, and the time that people are able to spend in front of their living room television is becoming less and less.

Especially here in New York, where everyone moves at five million miles an hour, it’s much easier to catch the latest episode of Peaky Blinders on your phone on your train ride to work rather than wait for a show to air on an actual television. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know that I’m going to be spending the next few days catching up on my favorite shows, and I recommend the same to you collegiettes, because we all deserve a study break!
