It’s no secret that New York is one of the biggest fashion capitals in the world. Whenever you stride the streets of the Big Apple, it’s literally impossible to avoid bumping into a Serena Van Der Woodsen or Blair Waldorf equivalent. Here are five current trends of the season that will keep you looking as high-fashion as the queens of the Upper East Side.

1. Faux fur vests (or coats)

Nothing screams high-fashion more than some faux fur to give a basic outfit its wow factor. Also, the price can range in order to fit anyone’s budget. Go shopping at Forever 21 in order to find an affordable piece to stay within your budget or splurge a little on a designer one to have an item that will be sure to last you years. Just make sure your fur is faux because we wouldn’t want to hurt our adorable little animal friends, now would we? Animal slaying is not a trend, ladies; keep that in mind.

2. Natural-looking foundation

The ups-and-downs of New York City weather can surely take a toll on a girl’s skin. Usually one with dry skin will opt for a luminizing foundation to achieve a sun-kissed glow while others with oily skin will lean towards ones with more of a matte finish. Why not have the best of both worlds? There are foundations on the market which provide both full coverage and a natural finish. Check out the Dior Star foundation or the BareMinerals Bare Skin foundation for a makeup routine that can withstand the crazy NYC weather.

3. Long line coats

Speaking of the crazy New York City weather, you cannot expect to survive a winter here without a dependable winter coat. Since it’s a must in your wardrobe, why not also make it a fashion statement? Long line coats are a huge trend this winter, which are a breath of fresh air from the usual puffers and peacoats. They’re not only trendy but very practical in the colder months.

4. Eye-catching shoes

Remember back when the only winter shoes were Ugg boats (which I’m still guilty of being too loyal to, by the way)? This winter, a lot more edgier and eye-catching shoes are being seen on the feet of my fellow NYCers. From caged boots with giant disco-era-style platforms to printed loafers, the footwear trend for this season has taken a complete 180 from our classic UGGs, combat boots, and riding boots. The great part about these items is that they’ll steal the spotlight, so for those days where you really could care less about your outfit, throw on a tshirt, jeans, and some spiked loafers for that “I look good without even trying” look.

5. Joggers

I don’t know about any of you, but once the temperature drops, there’s nothing that can seperate me from my sweatpants. That’s why I’m a huge fan of this year’s jogger trend. This fad takes your ordinary-looking sweats into some high-fashion loose-fitting pants that can be paired with any basic top and a statement accessory for a comfortable, yet polished outfit. College campuses have taken this trend by storm since we all know that nothing gets us collegiates better than clothes that look good, yet feel like pajamas.

Have you dipped your toes yet into any of this year’s trends that are seen all over the Big Apple? If not, consider them. Not only are they really practical choices for the upcoming chilly weather, but they’ll keep your friends questioning how you happen to look so fab at all times.

Hey everyone! I'm Juls (yes, short for Julie), and I'm a junior biology major with a double minor in chemistry and mathematics at Adelphi University. I'm also a writer and the head of the editorial team for Her Campus Adelphi. I've been running for 6 years and am a (beginner) Bikram yoga junkie, so I guess you can say I'm also a fitness enthusiast. If I'm not out for a run or in the yoga studio, you can catch me volunteering at my local hospital, laughing with my friends while out for coffee, or tuning in for the latest episode of Dancing With the Stars. Feel free to say hi if you see me around; I'm most likely that girl with a pair of sunglasses on top of her head even if it's cloudy outside.
