5 Little Ways to Brighten Your Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.
As summer comes to an end and the trees outside begin to change color, our moods can be dampened by the shorter days, colder weather, heavier school workload, and lack of summertime fun. When that happens, follow these five small tips and tricks to instantly give your day more of a summertime glow.
1. Be extra kind – and pass on any kindness you receive. Have you ever had one of those bad days where you feel as though everything is going wrong? Have you ever had somebody express an act of kindness during that same particular day? If you’ve experienced this, then you know how much of an impact a simple act of kindness such as holding a door or giving a compliment can have on a person, especially if things haven’t been going the right way for them. Also, if somebody does an act of kindness for you, make sure to pass it on to somebody else and spread the happiness! This tip’s a bonus, because not only will your day be brighter from your own good deed, but you’ll also make somebody else’s day a whole lot happier. Remember – it’s the little things that mean the most.

2. Schedule a GNI. This can go both way – girl’s night in or girls’ night in. Whether you’re spending the night – or day, either works! – with your best friends or alone, we all know that there are just some days where staying in sounds like the best plan to follow. Let’s be real, how many things sounds better than manipedis, ice cream, Netflix marathons, and Cosmopolitan (either the magazine or the drink, entirely up to you!)? Not much. Staying in eliminates the pressure of needing to get all dolled up and socialize with random strangers whose company you may not always enjoy. When trying to cure stressful days in class, go for this easy remedy.

3. Catch up with a friend you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while. Us collegiates lead busy lives and sometimes, we can get so caught up on everything on our campuses that sometimes, we can slightly neglect our incredible friends we have from our pre-college days. Take the time out to make a call, schedule a lunch date, or even just initiate a conversation via text with a good friend whom you haven’t exactly been completely up-to-date with. When it comes to friends whom you don’t hear from everyday, there’s always a lot to talk about and catch up on, so be prepared for some good conversation!

4. Treat yourself! Girls require pampering every once in a while, especially after a long day of school, work, life, etc. Whether that means going out on a mini shopping spree, treating yourself to a spa manicure, stopping by your favorite bakery for a delicious slice of tiramisu (or whichever your favorite cake happens to be), or simply getting your brows done, don’t forget to allow yourself to be spoiled once in a while because you deserve it! Being a fabulous woman of the 21st century isn’t easy, and since you’ve gone it all down, why not indulge (only if your budget allows for it, of course!)?

5. Go for a walk. This may seem too simple to be a tip, but it really works! Not only does exercise release endorphins, which will instantly perk up your mood, but walking may lead to discovering beautiful scenery. Come on, who doesn’t appreciate a gorgeous Instagram-worthy nature walk? As long as you don’t go out in miserable weather or in insanely uncomfortable high heels, a short stroll should allow you to take in the moment and help you recover from a not-so-amazing day (bringing friends or blasting your favorite music during this walk can also help improve your mood!)

Next time you’re feeling down with the blues, remember to use these little tricks to brighten up your day. Also, don’t forget that although every day won’t be a good one, there is good in every day so always remember to look towards the positive side of things and no matter what, keep your heads pointed high, ladies!
Hey everyone! I'm Juls (yes, short for Julie), and I'm a junior biology major with a double minor in chemistry and mathematics at Adelphi University. I'm also a writer and the head of the editorial team for Her Campus Adelphi. I've been running for 6 years and am a (beginner) Bikram yoga junkie, so I guess you can say I'm also a fitness enthusiast. If I'm not out for a run or in the yoga studio, you can catch me volunteering at my local hospital, laughing with my friends while out for coffee, or tuning in for the latest episode of Dancing With the Stars. Feel free to say hi if you see me around; I'm most likely that girl with a pair of sunglasses on top of her head even if it's cloudy outside.
