After Oprah Winfrey’s moving speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday, there has been lots of talk about whether the former talk-show host and actress would run for office.
In response to questions on Tuesday about the possibility of Winfrey running for president, President Trump said that he thinks that he could beat her in a presidential contest, but did not think that she would run, The Huffington Post reports.
“Yeah, I’ll beat Oprah,” Trump said.
“I know her very well,” Trump added. “You know, I did one of her last shows. She had Donald Trump — this was before politics — her last week, and she had Donald Trump and my family. It was very nice… I like Oprah.”
However, interestingly enough, when Trump ran as a Reform Party candidate in the 2000 presidential race, Trump said that Winfrey would “always be his first choice” for a running mate, ABC News reports.
According to ABC News, Trump’s comments come after Winfrey’s long-time friend Gayle King remarked on “CBS This Morning” on Tuesday that Winfrey “loves this country and would like to be of service in some way,” but that she doesn’t think that “she’s actively considering it.”
“I don’t think at this point she is considering it, but listen, there are people who have said they want to be her campaign manager, who want to quit their jobs and campaign for her,” King said.
However, King did add that her friend was “intrigued” by the idea. Perhaps there is a possibility that Winfrey will toss her hat into the ring?
Winfrey has not made any comments since her speech addressing whether she will run for office or not. Although, according to ABC News, in October of last year, Winfrey did say on “CBS This Morning” that “[t]here [would] be no running for office of any kind for [her].”
But who knows? We shall see.
