College Student Receives Five-Year Suspension For Lying

NEW BRITAIN—A LGBT teen from Central Connecticut State University has just dug herself into a hole too deep. As communities grow towards accepting different races, orientations, and creeds, Alexandra Pennell, 19, claimed that there was someone out there who hated her. She explained to her university that someone was sending her anti-gay messages starting this past March.

The school felt for her and took her claims seriously. They reacted by holding a “Solidarity Rally” on March 13, which had about 300 students in attendance, where she spoke.

“Central is my home just like it is every one of yours, and I’m proud to call it my home,” Pennell said to the audience. “I stand here today speaking to the person responsible for this, and all I have to say is I’m not going to be run out of my home and I will not be intimidated by hate.”

However, moments before she headed off to the rally she claimed to CCSU police that yet another harassing note had been left when she went to take a shower. But minutes before the note had been left a cable from the surveillance device, which she knew about, had been pulled. The police felt that something just wasn’t right.

Police set up another camera that she didn’t know about a little more than a week later. After another week passed they removed the original tape recorder, stating that it needed repair. Less than an hour later the campus police received another complaint from her. So while two of them went to tend to the complaint, the Lt. Officer whet to watch the footage from the “secret” tape recorder.

An article from the Hartford Courant says, “That video shows Pennell walking off with a friend, then returning a moment later, speaking with two friends before going into her room. Two minutes later, she came out, looked around and then slid a note under her door. A short time later, she is seen returning to her dorm room, walking in with a friend, then walking out three minutes later with the note. She headed to the resident assistant’s office to report the incident.”

After the police confronted her a few times she finally admitted to the crime. She explained that she wanted to gain attention from her roommate, friends, and girlfriend.

As of right now she has earned a five-year suspension from every public school in Connecticut for the next five years. Furthermore, she faces eight felony counts of fabricating evidence, eight misdemeanor charges of lying to the police, eight misdemeanor counts of filing a filing a false police report and one count of making a false statement to the police. She has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear back in court July 26 in New Britain.

So collegiettes, next time you feel like you want more attention please think twice about lying. This girl has gotten loads of attention, but my gut is telling me this isn’t exactly the attention she was hoping for.
