Catarina Migliorini could gain $780,000 if she’s willing to lose something. The 20-year-old Brazilian woman has been auctioning off her virginity online for the past few weeks, claiming that she will donate as much as 90 percent of the auction price to charitable organizations that build homes in poverty-stricken areas of Brazil. The plan has been in the works for nearly two years now, when Migliorini signed up for the project after seeing an advertisement looking for virgins to film.
On October 23, the winning bid went to a man from Japan known as “Natsu,” who beat out a number of competitors as bids went from $190,000 to the staggering final sum on the final day. The plan, as Migliorini envisioned it, is for the pair to meet aboard a plane flying between Australia and the U.S., so as to avoid prostitution laws.
But that’s the thing – even though the auction sparked global outrage, with many people claiming she was nothing more than a prostitute, Migliorini doesn’t see it that way. “If you only do it once in your life then you are not a prostitute,” she told the Daily Mail, “just like if you take one amazing photograph it does not automatically make you a photographer. The auction is just business, I’m a romantic girl at heart and believe in love. But this will make a big difference to my area.”
Despite Migliorini’s charitable claims, however, Justin Sisely, the auction organizer who plans to make a documentary about the whole affair, is doubtful of her intentions. “In all my dealings with her, she made it clear that it was a business decision for her,” he said. “Now, given how big this story is in Brazil, she’s trapped. If she doesn’t give any money to charity, she’s going to look bad.”
As per Migliorini’s plan, both she and “Natsu,” will be interviewed before and after the auctioned-off intercourse, and he will be allowed to remain anonymous by keeping his photo out of the media.
