HC Abroad: Pencils, Pinot, and Picnics

Good morning Collegiettes™! Hope your Thursday’s are off to a great start! The weather in London has gone from being sunny and warm to breezy and cool just in time for the start of the school year. Looks like it’s time to swing by the stationary store and pick up a fresh pack of pencils!

This past Monday was my first day of classes and to be honest, it was a little more stressful than I had originally anticipated it would be. Before committing to LSE for the year, my teachers back at BC warned me that I would have some trouble receiving credit for many of the classes I would be taking at LSE. Naturally, I was too excited about having the opportunity to spend the year in London to seriously consider any of the negative consequences of enrolling in an international university. As it turns out, the credit for two out of the four classes I’m going to be taking throughout the course of this year will transfer back to BC, but the classes themselves will not count towards the completion of BC’s core curriculum or my finance concentration. Looks like I’m going to have a rough year ahead of me when I return to Boston … But really, who am I to complain? I’m living in London and having the time of my life!

I’m currently registered for the following four courses: History of Britain and the Empire, Microeconomics, Information Technology and the Law, and Corporate Finance. So far, I’m most interested and excited about my Information Technology and Law class. I’m not sure how many of you watched Suits (the best show EVER!) on USA Network this past summer, but after my younger brother got me hooked on it midway through August, I immediately downloaded the entire season onto my iPad and became obsessed with the idea of going to law school! My newfound passion for law and my love of all things tech-related has got me ready to dive head first into the reading for this class!

After a long first day of lectures, meetings, and email exchanges with professors from back home, my friends and I decided we deserved an afternoon of relaxation! We left campus, made a pit stop at the local grocery store for some goodies, and journeyed over to our neighborhood park to enjoy the last of the beautiful weather! With a bottle of pinot grigio in hand (the drinking age is 18 in London) and a bag full of crackers, cheese, and grapes, my friends and I had the perfect ingredients for a celebratory picnic! We spent the remainder of our day enjoying each other’s company and lounging in the sun before heading back to the dorm to grab some sweatshirts and take a nighttime stroll through Covent Garden. And what better way to end the first day of class than with a scoop (or two … Who am I kidding? Try three!) of sweet and refreshing gelato!?

(The perfect picnic!)

With a long week behind me, I’m looking forward to a quiet and peaceful weekend! I’m heading to Stonehenge and Bath on Saturday with a number of my classmates and then hopefully updating my personal blog, Chic+Geek, at some point on Sunday afternoon. Hope you all have an amazing weekend and keep an eye out for my post next Thursday!

Love,
Marissa
