Belle in the New ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is a Feminist

Remember how Belle’s father, Maurice, was an inventor in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast? Well, in the new live-action remake with Emma Watson, Belle’s the one who’s the inventor. Nice twist, right?

“I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books,” Watson told Entertainment Weekly. “Also, what is she doing with her time? So we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. We made Belle an inventor.”

We absolutely love this. The set director, Kate Spencer, added that music boxes will play a role in the move too. Since Belle doesn’t travel, Maurice (played by Kevin Kline), makes music boxes that have special meanings.

“We’ve made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world so she can see what she’s missing,” Spencer said.
